Most of the posts in this thread give me the feeling that many of you didn't pay much attention in middle school science class when they taught the scientific method.
How much of a difference are you guys expecting to see between different brands of gas?
Take Unobtanium for example...
His mileage differs by over 4% from tank to tank for no reason at all. It's impossible for him to measure the ~3% improvement he will get from ethanol free gas by running a single tank.
Even 10 tanks don't prove anything at all unless he can accurately compensate for factors such as temperature, seasonal fuel blends, wind ect..
It's a proven, easily verifiable fact that ethanol has less energy per volume than pure gasoline, so whatever his little experiment "proves" doesn't mean anything at all.
Not sure if this helps but I buy gas on these factors:
Cost: There's a Shell near me selling 87 octane for say 2.35/gallon but another just a bit further for 2.13/gallon.
Detergents: Chevron has Techron. Shell has its stuff. Cheap gas may not have such additives but do carry the federal minimums. I'm willing to pay an extra few cents for the "good stuff". After all how many of us purchased a bottle of Techron?
Location: If a gas station is a known chick locale, near a starbucks, or has a Duncan Donuts inside hey those are pluses!!
Re-Fuel frequency: I often hear its good to get gas from busy stations since they're constantly stocking up on new fuel. Hence you find me getting cheaper gas from QT. Its still top tier. (tip:Circle K gas is from Shell.) These two places are always busy.
Edit: Also I try to get gas from newer stations with newer gas station fuel pumps/tanks.
