when you fill up your tank..........

do you turn your car off? im not talkin about other proteges, only turbo ones. ive ALWAYS turned off my car when filling up because thats what it says to do at the pump. but since your running turbo and your supposed to let your car run for a while before you turn it off, is it ok to fill up your tank while the car is running? i know people will say "just wait the 30 seconds" but what if im in a super hurry or theres a line at the pump (does happen occasionally) or i just spooled up my turbo for a decent period of time and 30 seconds wouldn't be enough cool down time. so what do you guys do? im still new to the whole turbo thing.

When I knew I was going to get gas I would try not to hit boost on the way to the station. You're not going to kill your motor by not allowing proper cool down once a week or so.

i dont boost for a few minutes if i know i am getting gas and then i leave it running, get out and insert my credit card, wait for it to authorize, open the fuel door, remove the cap and by the time that is all done my egt's are at 700 so i shut the car off and fill up.......

it doesnt matter if your car is on or off. unless of course your exhaust comes out your gas cap and you shoot fire at idol. I have highway patrol friends that leave theirs running at the pump. along with city police and shariffs that leave theirs running. It isnt going to hurt anything. and if they ask you to turn your car off which they wont cause i leave mine on all the time...just cut it off after a bit.

P.S. YOU WILL NOT BLOW UP. NOR WILL YOUR CELL PHONE BLOW YOU UP. YOU HAVE AN EXTREMEMLY SMALL CHANCE OF STATIC STARTING A FIRE BUT I HAVE A GREATER CHANCE OF DATING BRITANY SPEARS THAN THAT HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!1

When the MSP turbo is hot it will draw coolent through it when the engine is shut down. This is a special feature in the type of turbo we have and is designed to prevent over heating and damage to the sensitive fins.

I dont think you will be affected if you are running stock boost doing it every once in a while .. my olny advise is ground your self to the car everytime you fill up! There is a 1 in a million chance that you will blow up at the pump but 1 time is all it takes right? (blowup)

i usually don't go into boost before getting gas.

even if you do and you stop to get gas, it's not the end of the world! after a few minutes, you would leave, so it won't make much of a difference. it does make a difference if you drive hard for a while, and then turn off the car and walk away. a turbo timer works well if you hate waiting for it to cool down.

I never turn my car off when fueling. Nor do I turn off my work truck. If you make sure to get out and touch your vehicle before grabbing the pump nozzle you should be fine. I'm a firm believer that starting an engine is the worst thing you can do to it. Meaning it causes the most wear and tear, not to mention more fuel is consumed during start up VS. a two minute idle.

^^^ good read

this kinda sums it up:

The cure? Cool water. Turbocharger bearing systems that utilize water-cooled center housing sections have been found to be in perfect operating conditions at the end of an entire race season. The water-cooled center section is not for cooling the turbo while its running (normal oil cooling does a good job of that) but is intended for cooling the center bearing section after the hot engine is shut down. The coolant in the center housing carries the heat from the hot housing away from the bearing system, thus preventing the detrimental carbonizing effects of heat soak back. For less stringent applications, air-cooled centers are just fine. But for ball bearing applications, you must always run water cooling for long-term durability due to the low oil flow requirements (less bearing oil means less cooling effect). You may notice that many race cars are equipped with air-cooled ball bearing centers. But keep in mind that they replace (or rebuild) their turbochargers after every race, which is quite a costly proposition.

Take Home MessageJust remember, to prevent FOD failure, always run a good air filter. For you street guys, the cost of a slight inlet depression loss totally outweighs the cost of a new turbocharger! As far as preventing heat soak back failure, run a water-cooled center housing design where possible. Those with ball bearing applications must always run a water-cooled center housing system! In any event, always remember to let your turbocharged engine idle down for a few minutes after a hard session at the track. Following these simple rules will ensure that your turbocharger will live a long and happy life.

I most of the time just let it keep running while i walk in an pre pay for the gas. Then when i came back out just turn it off and pump. I gives it a lil bt of time to cool down.

Leave it running, just dont do it in New Jersey because they will fine you, trust me I know....

Leave it running, startup while your pumping is the big bang i figure, but i let my timer count it down, it is on auto so it determines the time for me based on my driving before hand, but if I am rushed I just leave it running, gives you that russian roulette (sp?) feeling, knowing that you could blow up any minute.

ok our cars were not equiped with the water cooled turbo. We have just oil cooled. that entire article wasnt talking about our turbo. they were talking about turbos in general. there were some parts that were talking about our turbo but the one about the water cooled was about another turbo. So YES you have to let yours cool down.

Do what i do......leave the car running while you pump. Nothing should happen (ugh)

I was wrong and i am sorry. I could have sworn we didnt have water cooled turbos but oh well. Thankyou for informing me of this and backing it with the proper material. I now know something new. Thanks (hippy)

I mean if the manufacturer is requesting that you run the car for 30 before shutting it off just listen to them. I am impatient so i dont want to wait in my car that long before pumping gas. so i just leave it running.

Eventually anyone running there car while getting gas will set off a check engine light.
