When selling a car...

do you let the prospective buyer test drive your car?

What if the pros. buyer crashes the car during the test drive?

Do you only allow them to test drive the car if they hand you some cash? How much cash should you ask for (assume the sale price is $15K)?

What other precautions to take before giving the keys to the buyer?

I am new to private selling and need some tips

Tks

I don't know any people who would buy a used car without driving it first.

EDIT: as for your other questions: auto insurance covers the car, not the driver. As long as you give the prospective buyer permission, the car is covered.

Also, I would walk away if a seller asked me to put cash down just to run it through the gears.

my old man has paid private sellers $100 dollars so he could drive it to his mechanic to look it over. then if the mechanic revealed any deal enders, the seller keeps the $100. otherwise it goes towards the sale price

if you are confident in the mechanical state of the vehicle its not a bad option for serious buyers

I just sold my Speed3 last Thursday - and sold my '02 WRX in '08. For both buyers, the test drive was from my house to the bank to deposit the certified check. I still had insurance on the cars at the time. With State Farm, when you purchase a new or used car, you have a 14-day grace period where coverage is applicable for both cars.
