Wheel locks - dumb question award goes to...

ok mods - you can close this as soon as I get an answer.

I've got the wheel locks on my car. I haven't taken a good look at them, but I know there's nothing in the glove box written about them.

How do they work/How do I unlock them?

now why would one of us want to close it?

well anyway....we will assume you are talking about the wheel locks that are a dealer option...as in the "FACTORY" wheel locks...

if you go into the back of your car...pull up the matt thing that covers your spare tire...find the lug wrench, which is in its own little pouch in there.....take it out...open up the pouch and you SHOULD find inside with the tiny factory lug wrench....the KEY for the factory wheel locks....it fits in the lug wrench...and then OVER the top of the factory wheel lock...you just rotate it till the two patterns line up and engage. then you remove the lock like you would any other lug nut.

Piece of Cake

It's a dumb question...

only if you ask it more than once.

At least this time they didn't zip tie the one on my P5 to the lug wrench like they did on the '95 Miata. Good thing I looked for it before I needed it and couldn't get it off the freakin' wrench! Jim

Thanx - just 2 things:

1) Yep, I remember seeing the "key" in the glove box when I bought the car.
2) The lug wrench is with the jack in the "pocket" on the right side of the hatch.

Got a coupon for a free tire rotation/balance which I'm gonna use on Saturday.

In relation to wheel lock key

This happened to my mother.

She bought an ES 2.0 a few months ago. She's not to keen on changing wheels so she asked me to show her how. First I removed the hub cap and found the first surprise of the day : weird wheel locks (not the McGard type). So, ok, wheel locks, where's the key? We searched everywhere in the car, NO "key". Called the dealer, he had no idea what we were talking about, then he suggests we go to the service dept on the next monday, he could not help us at all... Who in the world would install wheel locks on a car and not leave the key?

Second surprise was that when I disabled then ignition cutoff switch, again to show her how it works (anti-theft thing the insurance wanted), the car almost caught fire. There was a short in the wiring done by the system instaler and the wires got fried in just a few seconds. Dense smoke and VERY hot wires. I even burned my finger slightly before I could find the switch again. I unplugged the battery and called the dealer again, this time to send a towing...

When we went the following monday to get the car, they destroyed the wheel locks while removing them, they had never seen this type of locks... Dealer was fair play anyway, he gave us a set of McGards free of charge, and fixed the wiring. Since this "smoky" incident, I'm a bit nervous : I have the same ignition cutoff switch in my P5...
