what would u do 4 long commute

same issue i had, 11 mile each way commute to 63miles each way commute.
decided it wasn't worth the hassle of a 2nd car, insurance, maintenance etc...
just drive the ms3, and when it's time for a new car, it is lol

Oh so you lied to me about buying you car, no worries I probably bought a better one anyways

No way around it, unless you buy a Hybrid or drive a motorcycle. I drive 148 miles on Monday and 148 miles on Fridays to commute to/from My military duty station to my house. I also have a Kawasaki ZX12 2002 inwhich I calculated 43 Miles per gallon on that commute, once, averaging 80mph. Ooooh I can save alot $$$$ driving the bike, but I cannot take many items with me...like I can in the MS3. I had point A to point B vehicle, and believe me the constant $$$$$ for preparing it for State Inspections, constant repairs (components starting to break or out of specs), and the gas consumption out of specs due to it being old ADDS UP! So, I have one lovely car (MS3) that MAY have only one major issue.... gas mileage.

Here is your solution.

I travel about 50 miles roundtrip each day (except weekends), car has about 13k miles on it right now and it will be one year old in September. I love the MS3 as a daily driver, get to know where you can have a bit of fun on the highway without getting tickets, ha ha. Or if you just want to get the best mileage, drive easy but upgrade your stereo system and enjoy the tunes.

I had a Geo Metro for many years. Got at least 40 mpg, but holy crap, that car was a bear to drive. The only redeeming quality was upgrading the stereo so I could drown out the road noise, the engine noise, and the lack of air conditioning...

why do people assume that the smart will get destroyed by semis and blown around the road by the tiniest amount of wind?
they've been in germany for a good second now and i havent heard of one incident where this happens, i also havent heard of an incident where a motorcycvle gets sucked under a semi so what makes u think it will happen with a car thats heavier?

yes its small but thats the trend everything is going towards, and the honda fit isnt too much bigger then the smart

Only thing I have to say negative is the $$$$. If a person wanted to save gas they could subtract $3Gs from a Smart Car price and buy a Motorcycle OR....OR add about $3Gs and buy a Bigger/better car. I do have to say though that The Smart Car has TOP QUALITY equipment/components on it and I would rather buy a SmartCar than that STUPID, GAY LOOKING, and Carpet wearing CUBE that Nissan came out with.

I drove 44 mile round trip for 4.5 years 5 days a week... half of that time was in a 1995 Dodge Neon... power nothing. Great gas mileage but BOOOORING! I got the MS3 and suddenly my commute was much more fun... Minus the 15 minute delay at the downtown tunnel. Now I am doing a 60 mile round trip commute (thankfully this job ends in two weeks) with my MS3. I love my car. She is bone stock for the most part. The only thing I did to make my commute better was rip out the Blowes stereo and put in DVD head unit, new amp, sub and speakers all the way around. My MS3 was bought as my daily driver... I knew leaving the lot she was going to rack up miles. I have had her for almost 2 years and she has 37K on her. She runs like a top and I am only on my second set of tires.

I drive 60 miles round trip to work when I go to the NH facility and once a week I drive to the MA ficility and thats 240 miles round trip. the Speed 3 is a great commuter, its fun to drive and I average around 29-30 m.p.g. The only thing that sucks is putting all the miles on the car. But thats what I bought it for.

OP here.

cool stuff. so a quick update, I think I will be having an interview setup within the next couple weeks... wahoo! always exciting to check out new opportunities...

anyhow, 52ish mile commute one way though. so another question which I just came up with is the fact that I have a TRZ poly rear mount currently sitting in my trunk,,, was planning to install it any day now. would be great for zipping around town. but now that I am potentially looking at lengthy commute, would you be concerned that the mount will be extremely annoying / uncomfortable for the long highway drive?

thx

If anything the upgraded motor mount would be more annoying around town than on the highway. You really don't notice any vibrations once you have gotten up to speed, and if you do, shift down because you are bogging the engine.

I have been comuteing 110 miles a day, 5 days a week for 4.5 yrs. I have had my MS3 now 17 months with 54K miles on it now and I have to say the last 17 months has been the most fun "at work" in a long long time( since 96 WS6 TransAm in Clearwater Fl).
I am getting from 26 mpg to 32mpg depending on how much I have enjoyed my commute that tankful.(how many expensive cars are put to shame).
I got 26K on the OEM tires and changed them last oct before the first snows up here in WI to Yoko Avid W4S and have about half life to get through another winter at 54K.
Dealer replaced a broken MM and a half shaft/bearing but other than that and changing my oil when it's 15 outside I have totally enjoyed this DD.

If my commute got that long, I'd totally buy some little POS penalty box to take the commute abuse. My MS6 eats gas and tires too fast and my paint is chipped enough already. I have no issues making it a garage queen (again).

new to forum

New to forum. Have a 2006 speed 6, black mica with 52,000 miles. Need to replace my pirellis p zero m/s (about 25 k mi). have had no real complaints with the pirellis except i wish they woul have lasted longer. got me thru this winter's unusual snow (for south Jersey). i want a tire that is resistant to hydroplaning.

I drive around 600 miles per week and have 47K on my 8.5 MS3 and just cant imagine spending the money to buy something else just for a DD. It's not like this car is some $70k car you want to keep the miles off and value on. It's an fun as hell to drive econobox with a turbo thats the end of it... just my 2 cents
