i have an automatic but when i switch it to autostick, what rpm's should i be switching gears at ?

depends on your style of driving. I usually shift at low rpm to conserve gas. There was a noticable difference in my protege (gas wise) between driving easy and pushing hard which is expected.

I usually downshift around when the car would auto-downshift when in auto mode. I never downshift hard into first (or really downshift into first at all), i find it jerks the car real hard.

downshifting to 1st isn't the best...you actualy break traction in an auto...while still moving(hahaspit) Try and shift before vvt and vtcs if you are trying to be conservative and shift before 6600 for speed. VVT is around 4000 and vtcs is somehwere between 3200 and 3400. one thing to do is downshift once or twice depending on your current *speed vs gear and coast at 4k and once you get an opening punch it to pass!

*meaning if yu are at 4th at 45mph floring it will only get you to 3rd....drop to 2nd for a split second or 2 and you should be fine. if you do this on a regular basis invest in a tranny cooler.

I love tiptronic on the Mazda 3, I ride it really hard, anything below 40 km/h when I am doing spirited driving, I will shift to 1st and floor the gas pedal just a split second before the shift, I just get pulled back in my seat no jerking. Downshoft as low as you can just floor the gas at the exact moment of the shift, you will feel the speed with no jerking.

I had jerking and the michelins give off an autable chirp when down shifting at 35. another thing is to get acustom to the amout of gas you need to controll the jerk when downshifting...when you master it the car will sound like it's revving hi but not nose dive at the same time.
