what ethnicity are you?

so I was sitting in my garage having a smoke and watching a tennis game when i noticed one of the players had an odd last name and I wondered, hmm what ethnicity is he. It then dawned on me that every time that question is asked, you can hear a slough of answers from Mexican, Serbian, Russian, Italian, German, and so on. But the I wondered well is anybody just American? and it came to me that there really isn't anybody that considers their ethnicity, American. So do you think there will ever come a time when the question of what ethnicity are you is asked, the answer will just be, American?

exactly. do you ever think that someones ethnicity will just be American?? I realize that America is one big melting pot, but do you ever think that people will just be American

the only people that can really be an "American" are Native Americans....the rest of us jumped onto this boat at some point in our family tree....

but, didn't they migrate from somewhere else, too? forgive my ignorance. it's been a while since i've studied them.

back on topic, i consider myself american (born in chicago) but ethnically speaking, i'm filipino.

Well technically your nationality would be the country in wich you are a national. The country you hold citizenship in.

I think you are confusing nationality w/ ethnic origin...
I just posted something about this about 2 weeks ago:

the questions points out the problem with this thread... the news story.. and one of the issues with race.

people do not know the difference between RACE COLOR ETHNICITY CULTURE NATIONALITY & ORIGIN

bg_cu.jpg

I asked what "color" the man was and I get "Dominican".

btw a few facts about the person in this picture:

RACE:Black
COLOR:Brown
ETHNICITY: African-American
CULTURE: changes with mindset/likes/dislikes of the individual
NATIONALTY:American
ORIGIN: Africa

his great grandmother was ***** by a "white" man productin his grand father so he's technically black & white

he spent A LOT of his life on welfare

In his opinion the only one that truly makes him "who he is" is his CULTURE that is his to define.

Seacrest out!

it's soooooo f'n funny because my wife is a sociologist. Sh'e giving a talk on Multiracial identity in America in NYC in the morning. I help her with a lot of her writings a research.

to answer you qustion: "do you think there will ever come a time when the question of what nationality are you is asked, the answer will just be, American?"

if you truly mean "nationality" then yes, I myself can say that I am American.

but if you mean ethnicity, then no American will never be an ethnic origin.

as a side note:

we are all African btw that is where all man "migrated from"...(dont belive me?...look it up!)

or watch the video

Nationality? American and proud of it.
Ethnicity? Primarily Latvian. But I do have some family history from Sweden and the UK.

I'm an American citizen. So my nationality is American. My ethnic origin is Arabic.

U.S. citizen but ethnically,I'm Filipino... w/ a little Chinese mixed in(but understand or speak none of it).

.. Am I the only one that has a mixed ethic background?

I know I'm primarily German and Irish, but I also know that there are a few other lil' bits of other ethnicities mixed in there, though I can't remember what they are off the top of my head.

Maybe THAT is what qualifies you as an 'ethnic American'? .. If there is such a thing. I know America is supposed to be a big 'stewpot' of all the different ethnicities. So maybe someday waaaaaay down the line, when all of the various ethnicities have been mixed enough so that we have a Japanese-Irish-Polish-German-African-andallthebajillionothers as the standard, THAT will be it!

.. I'm only on my first cup of coffee, so if that doesn't make sense, blame the lack of caffeine.

Spanish (Spain), Portugese, Scotish, and Cheerokee. I speak only english. My father was born in Cuba, but his parents were Europran spicks so he is lighter skin, eyes, and hair.

English,Scottish,German and French.

I guess my forefathers liked to get around a bit. A little dip here and a little dip there....
