What kind of bad paint is Mazda using???

Err... ummm... yeah... I am notorious for tailgating but I'm trying to change my habits on that. :D Still, in the manual it states that you should be 130+ feet from the car in front of you. The exact number I'm not sure on but I know it's over 100'. That is IM-possible in the DC/Baltimore metro area. You drive that far behind a car and you're going to get a) major tailgating on your ass, or b) someone will come in right in front of you anyway. I just try my best, stay away from trucks etc. but there's only so much you can do in an area of 4 million people, 3 million of them being on 95 at any given time.

paint and process

Owning a body shop and being a painter are two different things. For clear coat application, you would need to put down another coat or two of color depending on condition of existing paint, then clear coat. Most factory paint jobs are done either in water base or in high solid urethanes. If a vehicle has too much film build-meaning that the vehicle has been painted a few times it will chip as well or worse than what you have now. A good paint selaer will help with staining from bird dung or bug and tar goop. I have heard that the lexus factory uses some kind of gloss enhancer but I have painted small jobs on a lexus with no problems with matching and that was with PPG. Most reputable body shops are certified by the respected paint companys for lifetime warranty work. You need to check into that and you get what you pay for, material and labor wise- (laserp5)

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's a hard habit to break. At least I don't ride up on someone at high speed anymore and try to push them along. Sometimes it's just hard when it's so crowded.

There's also that 3M clear plastic stuff (and similar) that is laser cut to the shape of the car's front end. That'll help.

Has anyone had problems with their paint loosing its gloss? My outside mirrors, and the strip above the rear license plate have lost their gloss! I don't get it...

I think that the paint problem is common in many new cars today. Premium models can get premium paint, unfortuneatly with the reduction of lead in our paints, they just aren't as durable, unless you can get the more expensive stuff. I've seen teh same problem with fords, Chevy's, Chrysler/Dodges, etc. I'm not so sure about honda or Toyota but I've seen some corrollas with thier paint flaking off.

yup, my mirrors, and door handles...

thankfully Mazda is goning to take care of it for me :)

im going to have my friends body shop respray the entire car..then put a few coats of clear on..THAT IS, if I don't get another car first...

Really? I already complained to them about the excessive chipping, and they just shrugged it off as 'normal wear.'

Is the gloss thing something they fix?

Stongard rules.

I put Stongard on my car less than a month after I got it. I have had the car about 1 year 4 months and 23k miles and have NO chips on the front bumper, hood, mirrors...come to think of it I have no chips anywhere. Makes the $600 initial investment worth it...

More Questions about Paint

Sorry to bring up a thread from a long time ago, but I just recently stumbled onto this site and am in awe of the plethora of cool info shared between such enthusiasts....

I was wondering if Mazda USA covered repainting of side mirrors, door handles etc that have "lost their gloss"? It seemed like RyanJayG said his was covered....

If not, has anyone tried to do paint touch ups with auto paint from a spray can? I have found some companies who will make you a custom spray can of paint for $20-30 or so. They also have clearcoats.

The rest of my car seems fine except those damn plastics!

Any insight would ge great...
