After making this post

http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123813948-Strange-sound-at-3.5k-RPM-s

and after taking the car to many different shops they all said the same thing. The motor has low end damage due to that Mazda defect with the FS motors. I can drive the car but I can't do any highway driving or the thing will die.

link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_F_engine#FS

So now I'm faced with either selling the car or doing a motor swap.

I crunched the numbers and the cost of a motor swap with the same motor is probably going to be around $3200 (This is coming from shops who are charging close to $1000 to drop the motor in). The car is only worth $4100. If I did the swap, it would equal out to a year and a month of $250 car payments (Not worth it in my opinion cause I would be faced with a car note)

I don't want to go back with the same motor because of the defect and the fact that it is slow.(whistle)

I was leaning towards the H22 or H23 swap but lost track of the cost and the link to the guy who put one in.

Any suggestions and total pricing would help. I have 3 friends that are mechanically incline and I'm sure we can drop this motor in one weekend if needed. I just need an example of what to do or something with instructions for the wires and other parts that don't just bolt right up.

Thanks in advance guys

the defect being the VICS screws? If so, drop in a replacement motor and swap the stock intake manifold for a 626 intake manifold during the swap. The 626 manifold has no butterflies in it at all. So, no chance of screws coming loose.

Wait somebody put a h22 in a protege? I know one person did I d16 and u considered a b 18. But it would be an electricians nightmare.

You can get an fsde for under 1000 have ur friends help drop it in

If you had the place to DIY that would def be the cheapest route. I just swapped in an FP-DE into my P5 in February and it costed me a whopping 450 with new belts and fluids. I just trolled the forums and CL for a while till a good deal came up. It was also good that I had a Miata to drive around in while the P5 was down.

If you were closer I could help out, I souce these motors from a local Yard for $500 and charge ~500 to put them in. $3200 is a joke.

Yeah I was reading ihone post about his time with putting the KLZE in and everything he's done I want with the exception of the Auto tranny. I want to have the A\C, Cruise Control and what not.

@Traitor......Yeah that seems to be an option next to doing a overhaul on the current motor. Cause I figure if I have to buy a new FS I might as well work on this since it's going to need a new timing belt, etc. etc.

@Jedidah55.....I want to be in that fun club but I need a work up of what to do. I can take a motor out but I need to know what hoses goes where, connections that may need to be spliced, so forth.

@Duff.....at 1,085 miles I'm considering it. Serious. I as the car runs now I could make the drive but it would take 2 days or less to get there as I would be taking the back roads. On top of that I really won't be ready till the middle or end of summer as my funds are being sucked into a black hole known as kids. Hopefully the current motor will last until (Finger's crossed). How long do you think it would take and how much, if I was to drive up there to get you to do it?

I've done it before for a member on the forum, digitalslacker is his name. He drove up on a saturday and left later that night all finished. At most it would take me 2 days. Last time I priced an engine locally it was $500 and I charge $500 to put it in, a little extra if you want any maintenance done to the engine before putting it in. I've done about 8-10 Fsde swaps over the yeas and can practically do it with my eyes closed lol. I'm always on the forum browsing around Just shoot me a pm if/when you are interested.

That will be cool. I will let you know. Probably would need the timing belt and other crap changed out. Also how hard would it be to put some locktite on the screws so this wouldn't happen again.

Shot me a price for everything so I know how much I need plus gas since I'm taking a roadtrip
