What have you done to your MS3 today?

Cool pic of my car after some new mods:

-partplaza cf hood lifts & eye lids
-hd front lip
-blacked out upper and lower grills
-wheels

So sick, did you paint the grille or wrap it? This picture alone makes me want to do it. I haven't really seen many cosmic blues that have that done or have a decent pictue of it. Well done

I have the MS CAI installed but I opted not to put the watershield on. I do have a makeshift water block between the filter and the plastic wheel well so that water doesnt come through the slits from the tire onto my filter. Not having the shield on hasnt caused a problem in the two years I have had the CAI. The only issue I have ever had is after a severe hosing of the engine bay the filter was soaked. I just took it off, dried it out and used a backup until it dried. Rain doesnt get down in that area of the bumper if you close off the holes from the wheel well.

Also, over the weekend I went to Mean Streets Carshow in Austin, TX. Took second place in the open Mazda Category. There were 4 other Mazdas showing. I didnt recognize any of the cars there. Two of the guys were Project M guys. They didnt seem to want to talk to me when they were looking at my car. Oh well.
Andy(bagged 6) said ppl some team "unique" were booing him for taking first place. If that was your crew or you, talk about sore losers.....Project M is an all Mazda club based in Houston. We live, breath, sleep Mazda. Look us up we are on the come up big time

Ordered a CP-e 60 Duro RMM. (Tired of this P.O.S. TRZ) Also, thinking about finding a stock CBE to put on. She's getting too loud for my taste.

Bear in mind that fuel consumption doesn't matter in this case, only air and water consumption. I am also assuming that the throttle is closed completely when the throttle pedal is not pressed (I'm not 100% sure on a fly-by-wire car, though I think it's a safe bet).

In neutral the engine is spinning at it's lowest possible speed (~800rpm-ish) so it's consuming the smallest possible amount of air, which means that it will ingest the smallest possible amount of water because the flow rate through the intake is minimized.

If one is using compression braking the engine is spinning at some speed above idle, say 3000rpm, even with the throttle closed it will consume more air than if it was spinning at only 800rpm, and my intuition says that the engine will ingest more water as it consumes more air.

The fuel efficiency argument really depends on the car, I have noticed in my MS3 that the AFRs spike high during engine braking (over 30:1 afr, maybe there's a fuel cut?) so it probably consumes less fuel than if it was in neutral (~14.5 afr).

(2cents)

Edit: I have noticed MAP pressures of around 19-22kPa (absolute) during both engine braking and idling, so the intake is under vacuum in both situations.

As always, thanks for taking the time to answer, James. I had a fundamental misunderstanding when it comes to the AFR. I was under the impression that at idle, the throttle was slightly open to allow some air to mix with the fuel in order to keep the engine moving along. This is not the case and under both engine braking and idle, the intake is under vacuum. Which makes sense because the throttle is 100% closed (what I thought happened at idle is actually a big problem!). As described below, this is probably handled by a valve that is separate from the throttle blade.

In regards to what you noticed with the AFR on engine braking vs idle, I found an interesting site where someone explains how a Bosch throttle works. It sounds like this is relevant to your interests:

The other function of the idle switch on later models is fuel cut-off during coasting (over-run condition). This fuel cut-off occurs until the engine RPM fall to a set value at which point fuel is restored for idle condition.

http://www.firstfives.org/faq/throttle/throttle.html

Some other places I've been reading seem to correlate that thought of fuel cut until closer to idle speeds when the throttle is closed.

Forgive my ignorance, but if the throttle is closed during both engine braking and idle, should it not matter which is done through water because air should not be coming through the intake? Then again, if at idle fuel is being squirted into the cylinder, air is required for the mixture. When the injectors are shut off during engine braking, there should be no air coming in with the closed throttle.

I did some further reading on idle air control valves and it seems like this is something that would open up to keep the car idling, where the ECU operates a valve that allows enough air in to idle. During engine braking, I don't imagine that the ECU would open this valve because there is no fuel to mix with. Then again, I'm a noob at this stuff. Here is a relevant link to the idle air control valves:

http://www.se-r.net/engine/about_iacv.html

Now the follow up to the idle air control valve is how is something like that situated on the MS3 (or any other car)...does it take a small bit of dirty air, bypassing the intake, or is the air for this valve coming through the intake? If the former, then the conversation is moot because any air being taken up isn't coming through the filter close to the ground.

I should get one of those Dashawk things...

She's getting too loud for my taste.
And you are getting too old for this car.

HAHA just kidding (that rude comment came from a guy with a stock exhaust)
Remember what I said about the TRZ(sssh)(whistle)
Let me know how many miles are on it.

haha, oh yeah (doh), ill let you know. It will have just a hair over 4k miles on it, so pretty new. As for the age, im 17, lol. I guess this is a bad sign for me...

If it were safe and legal, **** it, I'd run an open downpipe. I love a loud car.

And you bought a 370z? (whistle)

you shoulda heard my last engineering failure.

I used a obx header and made a 4 into 4 exhaust for the rolla.

figured that a cherrybomb per cylinder would be way mre muffilng than each cylinder would need

fail

it was the loudest setup I ever created

not bad loud

that title goes to a old wankel at the drag strip,... pure pain

but not real nice either

Koni Yellow/Pro-kit

Finished up my front struts - Yellows with Eibach Pro-Kit. Unfortunately, my front bumper now scrapes the ground when I'm getting in and out of my driveway :( This with one person in the car. Should be interesting going to work in the morning with my wife in the passenger seat.

I knew I would lower a bit, but I thought for sure I'd have enough clearance. My RX-8 made it with no problem.

Its because the ms3 bumper sticks way out in front of the front tires. It makes the whole front act like a much lower car in terms of getting into and out of places.

Pleaaaaaase tell me where you found one of these in stock from, and also, how much was it? Will you please do a personal write up on this mount and compare it to the TRZ? I am wanting to go to something more toned down, and will probably be selling my TRZ soon. I want less vibes for sure.

Thanks man, yeah I love it. Wait till you see it with the blacked out mirrors and blacked out nextmod spoiler lip. It is all coming together one piece at a time...front of the car looks sinister. And yes, it is paint. Semi-Flat black Rustoleum.

a few quick shots of the new stuff

-blacked out front grill
-valve cover and other engine stuff in gold

sorry, its dirty at the moment

I didnt do the lower part of the grill yet because i wanted to see what it was going to look like first. But once i put my lip on, ill decide if im going to do it or not.

if you go back a page strick, you can see a picture of mine with the lower part done :) The upper grill looks a lot better bro, very nice work. I think you need some sort of lip. What do you have in mind?
