Check out the A'PEXi filter... much better filtering qualities compared to the HKS. P/N for the one that will fit our common 2.75" intake setups is 500-A027 (filter and 70mm flange).

Any idea on how tall this is? That is my main concern since I have very limited space.

The HKS filter is only like 2.5" tall and will fit without rubbing my hood liner. I've never seen an Apexi filter in person to measure the height from where it connects to the MAF to the tip of the filter.

Lemme go out and measure it for ya. I think that it is quite a bit shorter than your perrin foam filter is.

brb...

The issue however is that I do not want my car to backfire are all as I heard it does with the corksport power series exhaust from time to time. as I understood it the reason it was doing this was because there were no cats.

If that is indeed the case I do not want to run catless because....i do not want backfiring.

Also as I mentioned I like the look of the stock muffler and the sound too. And while I could deal with the sound of an aftermarket exhaust system I really dont like the fat pipe coming out the back. I dont tihnk I can see much if any performance gains given those concerns since the cats and muffler would still be bottlenecks. If that is not the case then I am open to exhaust modification suggestions.

I've had the Apex 2.5" catless downpipe bolted to the stock cat back section for about 1000 miles (700 at 5psi about 300 at 9psi). Not a long time for judgement, but no backfires so far. And as I said, with the stock resonator and muffler in place it is not at all louder than the stock set up.

At 5 psi the gains were minimal, but it did give a little more pep and smoothed things out a lot. At 9psi my top end is VERY nice. I outran a 600cc Suzuki last night on the highwau 60-90 pull. I never ran 9psi on the stock exhaust though so can't compare the gains to that.

Great discussion and great input by Rich. Way to go man, but let me just add my 2 cents.

I am not sure if it was addressed yet, but in the original post you mentioned that you didn't want pressure drop due to the larger core. I can tell you for a fact that the ION FMIC (and the MAM FMIC) have a lower pressure drop than the stock set-up. After installing my ION FMIC my car actually gained about boost. IIRC it was 1.5-2psi. The stock set-up is very inefficient.

My recommendation at this time is to go with the MAM. The ION and MAM are both very nice units, but given the current circumstances surrounding ION I would just go with Beau. They have the best pipe routing and the highest quality materials if you ask me.

I wouldn't put the Perrin on my car because of the bumper beam issue. While it's a beautiful core, I don't want Insurance to not pay a claim because I cut the bumper beam and I don't want it to make my car less safe in an accident either. Good luck with your decision!

if you run catless, you will more than likely backfire. the cat will usually catch any of the unburned fuel in your exhaust before it has a chance to ignite. now i've backfired a couple times even with the stock 2 cats still in place on my exhaust. but it's very seldom. next week, i'm scheduled to have GHL's downpipe w/cat and resonator installed next week friday (it better happen this time) so i'll be posting about that along with comparison vids.

the cats are a bottleneck, but a larger hi-flow cat will do. according to corky bell, the cat isn't all that much of a restriction, with most averaging about a 2 psi pressure drop. the stock muffler will also present a bottleneck. but since you said you can deal with an aftermarket exhaust, why not get something small? since you said you won't be making that much hp, a 2.5" system will be more than adequate and i'm sure magnaflow makes universal mufflers that are 2.5" in/out.....choose a tip you like and that's that.

We do still offer hardpipe kits...we also offer 2 different dual setups... Greddy flanged setup for $208 and a HKS SSQV setup for $242.60...of course shipping is not included.

ok ok, so this thread died a week ago, but you all seem cooperative and I prefer not being 'just search' flamed (which i did and am still pretty lost)...

I want (or think I want) the whole fmic/cai/downpipe overhaul...but have little to no clue wtf all these little issues are and have little time to learn it all. I have dealer/service willing to do it all the installs under whatever warranty I have left

big bucks yes, big deal no...unless the gains aren't really worth it, its only going to increase the chance of other probs popping up, require some serious maintaining, or have major probs in the winter (in CT), or whatever other crap

basically, can I have my dealership install all (or parts) this setup, and have satisfying performance gains, and little to no headaches.. assuming I know nothing about troubleshooting/maintaining it ??

no worries it will fit ur Perrin intake. i had it setup that way, and my apexi was a lil longer then Rich's filter. mine was 500-A026 and it still fit the perrin SRI.

You could do most of it yourself. If you want the dealer to do it you should be fine as well. As far things breaking you should have no worries. The FMIC, downpipe CAI do not and have not caused any issues. You will see that most people have issues when they up the boost. If you want to up the boost look into getting either the Unichip or DSM's product. Other than that good luck. By the way whcih dealer is doing this for you?

wow that's crazy that your dealership is willing to do the installs. if you're just gonna get an fmic, cai, and exhaust, i don't think you have anything to worry about. there might be little things....a rattle here, loose connection there...but nothing major. right now, with my mods, the only i have is that the exhaust rattles when i go over bumps cause there's very little clearance for the piping.

peerrrfect...thats exactly what I was hoping to hear, I don't plan on messing with boost levels, but haven't worked it all through just yet so good to know.
thanks a ton.
and I probably could do some of it myself, but I'd just rather know it was done right, by the pros, and to not have the headache/anxiety that I would have if I did it myself waiting for something to bust, is well worth the cash

TonyMarch in Hartford (where CommieSpeed works/ed). the guys there seriously know whats up, lucky to have a sick service dept. The manager was on a tuner team down south, and I think still runs a little in NY...very very cool setup, great guys, and I highly recommend checking it out if you need work.
