so i guess after that is said, we can atribute the lower fuel grade to less aggressive tuning by retarding the timing and increasing air/fuel ratios
Not necessarily. The Cyclone engines use variable cam timing on the intake side so adding that into the tuning mix allows them to optimize the engine for various operating modes. Which means they can mix and match spark and valve timing to optimize performance. The Cyclone is one of only a very few engines to get a ULEV II emissions rating. Honda, which also has variable valve timing, is another that is ULEV rated.
