What does this do?

While I was cleaning under the hood i discovered this just hanging above the intake manifold. I really didn't pay any attention to it at the time because I had not experienced any problems while driving. A day or so later my CEL came on and I had troubles with the idle. Turns out the other end of that vaccume line plugs into the throttle body and that fixed the problem. Now my problem is that i don't know what that little selenoid is and where to put it. I thought that it went on the fire wall somwhere but it has been making this aweful rattling noise. I would do a search to figure out how to fix my problem, but i have no idea what the stupid this is called. If someone could help that would be great.

just let it hang...it had a spot on the stock intake for that little metal piece to slide into, i think most poeple just let theirs hang when they get an intake

It was attached to the stock intake. There is a slot that the existing tab fits into. When you install an aftermarket intake there is not place to attach it, so most people just let it hang.

I have seen some people attach it to the smaller breather tube with a plastic tie wrap.

Its the purge soleniod vavle and it does have to do with idles. Be sure it is kept in a vertical position, so tie strap it down or somethign.

Ok...yea when i got my car it already had the crappy ebay intake on it. I actually found a place for it to attach to the fire wall but it is what was causing all of my noise that I had...tomorrow i am going to go play with it and i will take a picture to show where i mounted it. Thanks for the help though.

I bolted mine onto the intake mani, you can where it is in the pic: right below the strut bar with two bolts and that other thing attached

just make sure its not kinked

Can anyone explain what it does exactly though? I have been wondering this for a while. Purge what? Why?

I hear these often fail, and are easy to break.
After doing some modifications to my intake, I have been having some problems, I am wondering if this is the source. It is not visibly broken, but I don't know how to tell if it is functioning properly.

you bolted things into your intake manifold?!?! not too smart...drilling/screwing things into intake manifold = bad idea

It has to do w/ the fuel system. I don't know the ins and outs of it though. i think, but don't quote me, but it recirculates fuel or something along those lines.

hes referring to the existing bolts on the manifold.

I did notice that it does make a little clicking noise while the car is idle. If you look at the picture you can see that little bronze colored thing. I was able to slide it into that and it actually worked very well besides the very annoying rattling noise that it made with the firewall. I was thinking about using some type of padding on the back of it so that it didn not rattle and then it would still be out of the way and look somewhat good.

Are you saying you just kinda wedged it into the bracket somehow? Just do like toucii said: remove one of the bolts on that bracket there and bolt it down securely on top of it.

Yea I just wedged it in that bracket and it fit perfectly. Since i didn't take the airbox off i didn't know what that was. I think i am going to what he said and just zip tie it somewhere else. The rattling noise is really loud and it really annoying. For a long time i just thought that it was the intake hitting the master cylinder. Thanks for all the help.

umm. question. why are you calling yourself a s*** head???

Haha. I am suprised that you knew that that ment. You're actually the first person to mention that. I took German for 4 years in high school and thats what friends from classed called me. I always have found it funny so it just kinda stuck. I actually spelled it wrong when I signed up but i didn't try to go back and fix it. It should actually be sheisskurl if you were speeking in "proper" german.
