What can i do about spool springs in the rear?

Its been 2 months. They arent settling down to where I want them. How can i take off the top coil? Should I go to a spring shop and have them cut the top or bottom coil off?

Call terry. He said he was working on a new set to replace the bad ones. He will help you out. Dont cut them whatever you do......even if it is one coil.....it will ruin your ride.

i agree, cutting them will throw off how the coil was made and reacts, and thats just ghetto and cheap in my opinion.

cut them....I have been waiting for someone to do theirs to see how it looks. i have the spools from february and they still don't sit low enough in the back. I am going to take one top dead coil out and see what that does. should be all it needs to get the back down another inch. there are at least 4 dead coils at the top when the spring is in the car. let me know what you do?? Later:D (p5yellow)

aren't those dead coils necessary for proper spring compression? in order for a progressive spring to be progressive, won't it need all the coils on the spring? i always thought those tightly wound coils up top were where most of the "performance" of the spring lie. i'm curious, that's all.

Ok, did this today and success so far. took one loop out of the top coil and so far it has dropped about .75 inches. I loaded the trunk up with stuff tonight, so will take a pic and post it tomorrow. the ride is pretty much exactly the same as before. had good luck with the end links, just have oil running out of the left strut....s***, time to upgrade i guess. wish someone would make some struts for this car. anyway, looks like one coil is going to do it. will post again with pics:D

ok, change on the original success, and now my car is worse. i rode with skunk2 coilovers for a year before the spools, then by cutting them and dropping it on down, my rear struts blew yesterday on some twisty roads. I will now go with Eibach pro-kit rear springs and some new OE struts. had to try it though. it is unbelievable how like pure s*** my P5 rides with blown struts. yuck, will have it fixed by this weekend though:D

paulmp3, try this at own risk. i would take pics and post them, but as of now the car is still freakin settling. so far just one coil has led to about a 1.25" drop and it is still going. the rear fenders are now down past the tread and heading for the rim:eek:

oh well, i had to try it anyway(mj)

i guess everyone has learned from your mistake, outstanding job! although i sure would have never done something ridiculous like that.

that suck man, I think im just gonna leave mine. Although i dont think my struts would blow as easy, i just dont want to mess with this perect handling.

my (bluemp3) needs JIC's coilover's

more news.......went and bought new factory struts, sway bar end links, bumpstops and a set of Sprint springs. Put them on today and WOW what a difference. No more clunking sound from the back end, 2" drop as soon as I was done ( now sits 1 inch lower than spools did in the back). I will leave the spools in the front cause I like them, but these Sprints rock as far as handling. Everything is so nice and new, just in time for a road trip....NOPI:D

OH by the way, you should have seen the strut when i took it out of the car with the cut spool springs. THe top had come completely out of the top perch, and the whole spring is now twisted looking and not straight up and down anymore. ****** them things up, I did. Oh well, I would have done it eventually. Just could not stand the 2" fender gap:)

what did the sprints run you? got any new pics. You feel they handle better then the spools

sprints ran me $193 plus $9 shipping from nopi. i do not have any pics yet, just finished a couple hours ago, so will wait for them to settle. yes i feel they handle at least as well as the spools did, maybe a little better. the sprint springs are different from all the other springs i have seen. instead of the dead coils being on the top of the spring, the sprints have them on the bottom. seems like the car sits a little tighter in the curves. mind you, i do have new sway bar end links and everything feels a bit tighter. i do like however the drop. with the spools all around i sat at 23.75 inches off the ground to the front fender, and 25" to the rear fender going straight up the center of the rim with the tape measure. right now a couple hours later, the rear fenders sit 24.25 inches to the ground with the sprints. i assume they will settle somewhat over the next couple days, hopefully down another .5 inch:D But already they are almost an inch lower than the spools. I will definetly let you know how these work out. Never knew it would be so hard to get an even 2" drop for this car. maybe this time:)

oh, and by the way, the cut rear spools ended up settling another 2 inches............looked all messed up:)

After 2 days of driving with Sprint springs in the back of my P5 and SUPER WOW. I will definetly be taking the spools out of the front next week and put the sprints in. These sprints are stiffer than the spools, definetely noticeable riding with different springs front and back....but damn it is an amazing difference. Took a couple twisty roads i ride often, and was able to push the car much more. a lot more stable feeling:D (boom05)

Bringing this thread back to life...
Anyone else decide to cut the coils on the "new" Spool springs??
I did. One of the small could off the top(all I could get and stuill have it fit in the perch), and Half a coil off the wider bottom. It lowered it about .5-.75" from the height they were, but it's still not good enough for me. It still handles well, but I'm not sure if I should go another half coil on bottom or not. Worse comes to worse, I still have that first set of rears springs I can mess with...The newer pics here are after cutting the springs.

well, slamdp5 did it, and it didn't work. i predict yours won't either. sooner or later, the progressive springs won't be so progressive anymore and you'll have major problems. good luck!

edit: the messed up rears you got earlier weren't designed to fit on the perch correctly. i would be very hesitant to even put those back on the car.

how about tein springs that will for sure give you a 2" drop? they are softer than the stock setup though, but if you're going after that lowered look, this might be your ticket. progress also makes 2" lowering springs.

Well, if it comes down to it, I've got some options, but for now, these are working. No wierd noises, and no clunk, so I'm good so far. I think it's been about 3 weeks since I did this, so something should have broken by now if it were going to.**Knock on wood**

yeah, mine messed up after about 3 days and then the struts gave way. mine were totally screwed when I took them out of my car, one side was actually bent and no longer straight up and down. good luck 2K3 and your car looks great :D

P.S. do you ever get pulled over for your windows??
