What are you paying for a replacement clutch...

I've got 42K miles on my speed6 and my clutch is starting to fail. They won't cover the cost under warranty and they won't do the TSB. They gave me a price quote of $3,100 to fix the problem. I asked for them to itemize the bill and they included $1200 for a new flywheel, about $1200 for labor, a new clutch (I forget the price) and a few other parts.

I took the car to a local transmission store who took a look at the car, they said the clutch plate was failing. I asked about replacing the flywheel, they said that on 90% of their jobs they can recondition the flywheel as opposed to replacing it.

I found the lightweight flywheel on the mazdausa site for $495, an upgraded flywheel for more than half the price the dealer was going to charge for a stock one.

I also learned that to replace the clutch, the mechanic needs to pull the suspension and a bunch of other things because the car is all-wheel drive. The transmission shop declined to do the work because of this. They felt it would not be profitable for them.

I've seen that there are many of you with with clutch problems here. For those of you who have paid to have it replaced - what have you paid??

Has anyone upgraded to the lightweight flywheel? What do you think?

The lightwheight flywheel will NOT work on the car I have personally tried to make it work and it will NOT. The Flywheel is not resurfaceable due to the floating design and the clutch is pretty expensive aswell. an aftermarket clutch is available from Spec for a pretty decent price. The labor is quite extensive as you do have to remove the subframe, axles, driveshaft, differential and then the transmission. roughly $1000-1500 depending on labor rates in your area.
