i know most, if not all high flow cats pass smog tests but some are still illegal in Cali.

the reason is that in cali it is illegal to replace your cat on any car made in the past 6 years, unless a SMOG ref.(thats a actual referee, not just the dude at the smog station w/ a smog license)says it needs to be.
then it has to be replaced with a C.A.R.B aproved cat.most are not due to the cost it takes to get that approval.about 5-7 grand every test, and it usualy takes at least 20 to 30 tests, provided it can eventualy pass.turbo kits usally take more.

you could just tell him blown 18wheeler tire slammed into the stock cats and destroyed them...

hmm i could, but i doubt he d buy it . im gonna keep my mazdaspeed axle back to make it looks stock.

i suggest atleast running a RandomTech or Magnaflow(Carsound) CARB cat though... an officer isn't going to give you any slack if you're running catless.

im goin to get a cat from the muffler shop.. high flow i think its about 50 bucks dont know what brand, does it matter to them what cat it is ? cuz i have to wait for the magnaflow and have to pay more

yeah, for newer (obdII) cars, in cali, you can't legally replace a factory cat with anything but another factory cat. but the cop might not know that a replacement high flow cat you have is not original equipment, he/she may just be looking for any cat. at any rate, it wouldn't back-fire or smell like a catless car would, and the cop probably woudn't even pull you over. When smog check time comes, i would replace the stock parts, even though a high-flow cat would probably pass. remember, a visual inspection is part of the smog check too.
