What are the factory tints?

I've tried searching everywhere but can't find an answer. What is my 2014 CX5 Touring tinted at? I'd like to go get the front to match the rear.

Thanks

I know you're asking about a 2014, but I just had my 2016 done yesterday and the guy in the shop said factory is 20%. I wouldn't think it would differ from '14 to '16, but not for certain. You can take in and have metered to know for sure.

Someone else had an earlier model measured and it was in the mid-20s.

I just had my '16 done a few weeks ago. He metered the rear factory windows, and they metered at 16%.

I wonder how they get away with that. Where I live in MD for instance apparently it Can't be lower than 35% yet the factory is 20? I don't get it.

I was going to get the front to match the rear but I guess that may not be legal...

In most states I believe you can have the back any % you want. At least that's the way it is in MO and KS (and I've heard from others in other states). The fronts are a different story. I got 35% in the front originally and didn't like at all. I just got 20% last weekend to better match the backs and I like it MUCH better. I've had a car in the past ('04 RX8 from '04 thru March of this year) with 20% and never had any issues with the police. From what I've heard, it's rare to be pulled over just for your tint % unless you are super dark, like 5%. Even people around here who have 5% all around have told me they've never had any issues. I guess you just have to determine if it's worth it to you to go illegal and gamble a bit.

I have been pulled over once for 20% on the fronts. It metered 16%, I believe. I was pulled over because my vehicle was older and they thought they would bust someone with drugs/etc. When I got out and they saw who I was, they seemed very awkward, but wrote the ticket and apologized to me. Still got the ticket though, sucked.

Wow, that does suck. How much was the ticket? If he was apologetic, why did he still write you up the ticket?! You and one other person are the only 2 people I've heard of being pulled over for tint. I guess it varies by state/county and situation.

The City, and County of Denver seems to really love handing out Tint Tickets. The last time I went to court for a ticket [in Denver], there must have been at least 7-8 cases ahead of me for Tint tickets. $100+ fine. I have been pulled over several times with 20% windows in other counties, and have never [knock-on-wood] gotten a ticket. I believe 27% is legal here. Fronts are all they look at, the rears you can have as dark as you like.

Man, I guess it's another easy way to make a quick $100. The limit here is 35%. I guess I'll keep my sunroof shade open to keep it a little lighter on the inside to prevent any pull overs. I have my windshield done too, but I talked to a cop friend and he said they can't meter the windshield. It's really hard to even tell it's tinted at 35% in the first place. So hopefully I'm cool there.

It definitely varies by locality. I had 20% on my Pontiac G6's windows and got pulled over in Baltimore County, MD. Car was stock and a couple years old. No violation except for tint. I was required to remove it and drive the car to the police station for them to verify that it had been removed.

I got my front two windows done to match the back, and my back windows metered 25%, with the machine blipping to 26% before settling at 25. 33% Ceramic was used on my front windows, which without tint, metered 76%, I believe. The resulting combo dropped the rated tint to a calculated 25.08%. To my Mod 1 Certified eye-balls, it looks bang-on, just like the math and meter says it should. However, I did not have him meter the finished product, because I didn't want the meter messing up the uncured tint.

I was pulled over because they thought I was some thug. It had to do with the part of town I was passing through, and the style of vehicle I had, plus the tint. They were hoping for a drug bust, basically. You have to understand, the vehicle I was in was an older FWD econo car (it was my daily beater when I have C6 Z06), and I was near a part of town where they had a decent amount of business...so...they figured I was a dealer, or at the least maybe had a gram or two in the car or something. When they saw me get out, they knew they'd hit the wrong car. However, there was a rookie being trained, and he had to learn how to write a ticket, so...guess who got to be the object lesson. The poor sap had to be TOLD to actually tear the ticket off the machine and hand it to me. It was just one soup sandwich of a traffic stop all the way around, and I pickedup the tab. $147, I believe. You just have to understand where I lived, and the ethnicity/crime/vehicle preference breakdown to actually understand what happened there. Shreveport, LA. Google it if you want to learn more about racial profiling, murder, drugs, poor city/financial planning, political corruption, affirmative action failures, and urban decay.

Also, tint tickets are just a harassment tool. One girl I know had 7 of them, and they go up each time you get one. You snap at an officer...well...rip your tint out. Because if he's an ass, you're getting more.

That said, police and I get along fine. I typically receive reduced tickets or warnings, due to my occupation and how I present myself. The tint ticket ordeal was just all kinds of special, with the rookie and all, but I never removed it, and I never altered my commute schedule (they trailed me for 1/2 a mile after I left the gym in the morning. I think they saw me pull out of the parkinglot, not actually get into the car. Probably figured it was a drop/deal spot), and I'm pretty sure their patrol covered the same area. They just didn't mess with me anymore after that.

Just picked my car up today after having ppf and front tint done. The tears were metered at 22%. The fronts were not metered without tint but there could be some slight reduction in light transmission on the front windows. Anyhow my guy installed 20% on the front and looks awesome!!! Pics to follow

Pics As promised!

Here is the after, 20% on the front with suntek films I believe, lifetime warranty and perfect match!!
