I am looking a buying a import 89-90 mazda mx-5 here in oz and since i have never owned a convertible or a small 2 seater. I was wondering what are the pro's and the con's to owning a mx-5 (miata)?

Regards, Michael

Pro: fun. inexpensive. handles like a Miata. You always seem to find the long way home. Driving with the sun on your face brings new hope to life, at least mine.

Only con, is I can only take 1 girlfriend around with me ;) if only I had a girl friend :(

There are CONS to owning a Miata?????

besides being small, i really can't think of any. RWD would lot be good in snow but i am sure with snows you could manage it......!

Yeah, watch out for those freak snow storms... in Australia!! :D

Only con is the size. Also, how tall are you? Miatas aren't that good for tall people - too close to wheel, obstructed view...

that is a disadvantage for people who have to deal with snow.....maybe he will want to drive up the glaciers down there in australia?????

missed the past where he lived......

my response was a general response......;)

edit: yeah space is tight. i fit snug into them...

Humm... it might be a little tight. Just make sure to get in the car and try it out to see how you fit. I have a friend who is 5'11" and his eyes were center with the top of the windshield so his vision was obstructed.

No Cons except that I'm a big guy 230LBS.(snug fit) But thats OK, it keeps me in my seat when I turn corners too fast.(2thumbs) Louie

I have heard thru the grapevines that you should buy one newer than '92...
Anything older than that had some sort of structural integrity issue with not enough side bolstering under the sheetmetal by the doors and rear quarter. Meaning, sides sag.

You need to listen to different grapevines. Nothing wrong with the early NA6s.

The early 1.6L cars have a weak nose on the crank. If a ham-fisted mechanic over torques or under torques the bolt on a timing belt it'll cause big issues. You'll have to rebuild the engine or replace.

As always, check out http://miata.net/ for information on the cars.

lol,

quote from Autoweek talking about the 2006 Miata:

"...the car has remained true to its enthusiast intentions, to its uncompromising pursuit of the simple joy of driving.
Too tall for it? Too bad; wouldn't want too high a center of gravity.
Too tight a fit? All the better to feel one with the road"

:D

Yes a short persons car indeed !

Another con, it seems that after 197k miles and a turbo and plenty of track time, the motor goes caput! :p

I'm 6'3" and used to drive a NA6C. It wasn't too bad once you get your seat setting down. I had no problems with head clearance or with the steering column. Then again, I am a little lanky as I only weigh around 175. If someone over 6ft. tall was looking for a Miata, I would probably recommend the NB series since it does offer a lot more seat adjustment and a little more leg room. It just makes for a more comfortable ride.
