Went and looked at a 2017 CX-5...

So I had a chance to take a look at the new CX-5 Touring and get some impressions about it. Sadly was not able to take it for a test drive.

Observations:

1. The 2017 Touring is much "nicer" on the fit and finish than my 2014 Touring.

2. Yeah, that commander knob is nice and I wouldn't turn down having one.

3. The steering wheel is definitely a softer leather than mine, and seems oval shaped.

4. Leatherette was not quite what I expected it to be.

5. Definitely noticed all the new chrome around the windows.

Impressions:
1. I think I much prefer my not as nice 2014 from a stylistic perspective. To me, the 2017 had too much leather on the dash and interior for my tastes. I guess that remedies a previous complaint about the amount of plastic in my 2014, but maybe a different material besides leather?

2. Although that commander knob is nice, I did not at all like the shifter re-design in this one (which I believe is the same as the 2016) to accommodate it. Whereas mine is basically a stick without a button and feels great in manual mode, this one has the button on the shifter and shifted down in one line and then had the manual mode to the left. I just didn't like this as much as it feels more like an "automatic" shifter than mine does, though it definitely saves on real estate vs. the shifter in my 2014.

3. I would say that the 2017 steering wheel felt better in hand than my 2014 one does.

4. I didn't like the leatherette seats at all. Felt cheap to me, and I would much rather have had cloth seats.

5. I thought the touchscreen "tablet" protruding out of the top of the dash would bother me, but oddly enough, it did not once I saw it in person.

6. Still don't like all the new chrome around the windows or the larger amount of chrome around the front grill.

7. I still miss the "swoop" design on the side, but some of the other front and rear lines on the 2017 were definitely nice to see in person and an improvement visually. Though the front I think protrudes out a little to far. I don't care for the "overhang" and how the front emblem protrudes out from the grill.

8. Feature wise, a nice improvement over the 2014 Touring.

Overall, I have to say it's a nice car, but at the same time I felt like it was not for me. As a 26 year old male, the 2014 I think retains that slightly "sporty" feel to it's fit and finish (design of the shifter with the handbrake and not putting leather on everything) that combined with how it feels driving, really makes me smile. By contrast, the 2017 fit and finish felt like those "nicer" cars I test drove before I settled on the CX-5. I hate to say it but the interior felt like an older person's kind of CUV and exhibited some of the things I didn't like about the competition back in 2013 before I bought my CX-5. I didn't feel like I was sitting in that "driver's CUV" that a yound 20's person like myself would like anymore.

Maybe I am discovering that I like the simpler things.

The 2017 is clearly the nicer vehicle, but I will not be trading my 2014 in for it. It's hard to spell out on paper, but there's just a feel to the 2014 that I love that I didn't get sitting in the 2017.

Regarding my point about the shifter, mine looks like this:

Compared to the 2017 which looks like this:

And I gotta say, just the feel of using my 2014 shifter vs. the 2017 made me love my 2014 so much more and it's the little things like that that impacted my impression. Again, clearly the 2017 is "nicer", but it took away some of that "feel" I liked in the 2014 CX-5 even if by comparison it feels/looks cheaper.

Anyway, that is all for now. I also had a chance to sit down in a Miata RF and I gotta say I want one, but damn if it wasn't hard to get in and out of.

Nice write up. I think it's too much chrome as well. The chrome around the headlights on the '17s bothers me so much because it doesn't go to the end and it looks like it is cutting off the light even if it's not. I much prefer the look of my 16.5, especially the front end. The swoop definitely is missed. I think it's silly that they put the infotainment above the dash... it looks so much nicer integrated. I will never understand why they went to leatherette with no cloth option for the touring and why they took out navigation and fog lights out as standard features on the touring. Those choices just seem like a step backwards to me. I prefer cloth over leatherette and leather. I do love the command knob and the buttons on the steering wheel on my 16.5. The new steering wheel doesn't appeal to me with its new design.

Nice review; echoes some of my own thoughts after seeing it.
I bought my 2016.5 after seeing the 2017 at the auto show and seeing many on-line photos comparing the models. Obviously the 2016 interior is closer to that of the 2017 than the 2014 was, but though I can appreciate the upgraded fit, finish, and features of the 2017, I still prefer the simpler "aesthetics" of the 2016. But that's me: I love that simple silver strip that runs along the right side of the dash and prefer it to the more "sophisticated" trim and stylings of the 2017. (Though I'm sure my right knee would prefer any new padding the 2017 may have added to the lower part of the hard plastic center console!)

As for the Miata, I had an eye-opening experience when I rented a Camaro convertible a few years back for a road trip. I thought it'd be fun, but I realized that I was no longer a kid (I'm about twice your age), have become a bit claustrophobic, and prefer the relative openness and higher seating position of a CUV.

Yep definitely how I felt too! The "simplicity" in my CX-5's design really I think enhances my enjoyment of it.

As for the Miata, getting in and out of it gave me pause for sure. I like higher seating too so I wonder if that would impact my enjoyment of a convertible too much.

Your style of GATED shifter was only on the CX-5 from introduction until the 2014.5 refresh. From 2014.5 current , they have all been the same Front to Back design.(detect)

Ah...is that what it is called? Gated shifter? I thought it changed when the commander knob was introduced. Thanks for informing me. :)

That said, would love a version that had my 2014 shifter with a commander knob!

Commander knob and console is available from overseas..., and your headunit has an option to activate a command controller...

However I have not seen anyone attempt to do a conversion yet for the US... So I can not vouch for it's success.

Nice write-up.

But we'll have to disagree about the gated shifter, as I can't stand the looks of them. Way too busy for an Automatic. In fact I refused to even look at the early CX5s for that reason alone.

Different strokes for different folks. :)

I love the look of my 16.5 shifter, the old 14 shifter looks more like my 13 corolla. Ew, noooope!

I just bought my 2017 Touring, and my impressions are similar to Colorado's:

Pros: The NVH was *much* improved over the 2016.5s (and I imagine prior years) - this solidified my decision over the 2016.5 GT. The suspension is better, but the ride is still zippy and fun. The dashtop display initially looked tacky to me as well, but in practice it's much less distracting to use while driving than looking down to the dash. The front end and lack of bright chrome accents (aside from those "Johnny 5" vents) on the interior grew on me as well. The steering wheel is more comfortable and looser than the 2016.5, and while not sloppy I can still palm it.

Con: The leatherette/faux suede looks pretty cheap and particularly ugly in black, but not as bad in beige - I'll probably cover the fronts up regardless. The console is wider and intrudes into the leg space more, and with the commander knob moved back the ergonomics for people with shorter arms/legs is a bit poorer.

The cargo area loses some height but it's not overtly noticeable. Same with the lower ground clearance.

I was looking at trims with I-ActivSense, and while I prefer cloth seats I couldn't find any 2016 Tourings with these features. I can't comment on the moonroof and powergate because the Tourings can't get both (lame), but I testdrove the 2017 GT and the stereo was definitely much better than the 2016.5s.

I drive both long highway and rough city and mountain roads, and while the 2016.5 GT had better console ergonomics and the 2017 GT had great NVH and softer than the 2016.5, both just felt a bit too firm on the 19" wheels when I hit the rough patches and I didn't want to break $35k OTD w/ adding new wheels. I may regret the mid-trim and will probably upgrade in a few years, but for now I'm pleased with my ride. :)

I also thought the ground clearance change was a bit odd. Almost an inch lower for the '17. For someone who lives where it snows a lot in the winter and on a back road that's not plowed right away, that would make a big difference driving through.

Maybe tied in with G-vectoring to improve cornering etc?

Actually, they changed the shifter early in 2014 to this style. My 2014 GT has the same shifter as the 2015-2017 CX-5. I actually made sure to get one with this style as I did not like the other version.

Guess it's just me that liked it then :)

Nope I like the gated shifter, it does look kinda dated/cheap but works very nicely.

I've never used to commander knob. It's a waste of space for me.
Blasphemy! 🤣

Nice write up CD. I want to meet the guy that thought "Leatherette" was a great name for that....

Sweet! Yep, I love it too. It was literally one of the first things that bothered me when I sat in the 2017. I rest my hand on my 2014 gated shifter like it's a stick shift. Having a button there would feel weird to me. I also like having the handbrake. I know it's not really needed, but I just like it.

I do miss a traditional parking brake.
