Went and looked at a 2017 CX-5...

You're talking me into keeping my '14 CD and you know what- ain't such a bad thing now is it?

Nice write-up.

But we'll have to disagree about the gated shifter, as I can't stand the looks of them. Way too busy for an Automatic. In fact I refused to even look at the early CX5s for that reason alone.

..and I thought I was a picky pain in the ass..wow! Thank you! What I like about it is I never need to look down to see where I'm at- like most of the car its very intuitive and driver friendly- also like not having to press anything other than the brake pedal to shift it- just a very basic and unfussy shift knob. Yeah it could definitely look better but it works beautifully and is kind of a tribute to manuals in a way. If I could choose between losing shifter or the manual handbrake I would probably keep the handbrake instead though admittedly.

Blasphemy!

Nice write up CD. I want to meet the guy that thought "Leatherette" was a great name for that....

I prefer 'Pleather" (rlaugh)

I don't even recall if my first CX-5 had the gated shifter. I guess I just don't pay that much attention to that stuff. LOL

I don't see the point of the early shifter those dog legs, but I think the present one is as good as it gets.

Sums up exactly why I like it.

You're most welcome!

But, its an automatic. How often do you have to "look down" at it while driving? (uhm)

For me? Never.

Pushing a button is an inconvenience? First world problems I guess. (drive)

For me it's just the feel of it.

Not while driving- but maneuvering/parking etc its kinda nice..and no pushing a button isn't an inconvenience but not having to is even better:)
Also dumping it into N while descending or approaching a red light- its a nice feeling that if you ham fist it a little nothing horrible will happen- not that it would anyway but the physical barrier is kinda nice to have. Stop making fun our old Corollas! Haha no I actually really do prefer these things. Oh I hate that fake stitching around your info screen too(fight)

Great honest review. Sounds like you have simple tastes, which means you can save a lot more money than some of us LOL.

The old gated shifter is old, I had that on my 2010 Mazda3. It is functional and I didn't have problems with it, but it just looks old and cheap nowadays.

My wife loves the electronic parking brake. She says its just so much easier to use. I don't mind either way. I still have the traditional parking brake on my MS3, but I don't recall ever having to use it while driving. Only few times I've used it is when starting from a stop on an incline, but you can do that too with the electronic parking brake. Actually, the newer CX-5s have hill assist, so you don't even need to do that.

I love the commander knob on our 2016 CX-5. I can count the number of times I've had to touch the touchscreen to do something; I believe I've only done that 3 times. I can do everything with the commander knob that I don't feel I need to touch the touchscreen.

I think the 2017 CX-5 with the NA engine is too similar to the 2016 CX-5 that you can choose either and be happy. Unless of course you really "need" the new features (power liftgate, hud, driver seat memory settings, rear ac vents) available on the 2017 model. The game changer will be the diesel engine when it becomes available.

Electric hand brake was added to free up space in the cabin and also reduce weight buy not having the mechanicals of the manual handbrake.

Just be glad it's not a foot operated handbrake! (rlaugh)

I agree! If you still need to do a Swedish flick, or have fun in the snowy parking lot, or in the event of an emergency, you can still apply the ELECTRIC BRAKE by continuously pulling UP on the button.
