welding my LSD & maybe new clutch

man, I really didn't need to read this...

Did you install it yourself, or did you have a shop install it? If you did it yourself, have you ever replaced a clutch on your own before? I'm just trying to qualify the problem a little.

Also, let's ask **********...have you experienced *ANY* problems with SPEC clutches?

I have done a clutch before, but the lsd needed to be replaced too. So i had a trans shop do it. The flywheel was resurfaced and everything is installed right. I think it may be a weak prressure plate.

thanks for the good rep, glad to hear all is well!

Anytime man, you guys have provided me with plenty of killer parts and it's great to have enthusiasts like yourselves providing the parts guys like me need! Keep up the great work!
BTW that LSD was really clean and had some meaty welds, seriously it was an awesome sight.

I'm also getting some conflicting info on whether I need to have my stock flywheel resurfaced. Is it necessary?

Keep in mind taking off and "shaving it" to reduce weight would require rebalancing and I don't want to that. I just want to replace the clutch and have it work.

Yea you have to get the flywheel resurfaced if you don't it will definitely void the clutch warranty.

in an effort to clear the air on this I called and spoke directly with SPEC. They *require* you either replace or resurface the flywheel prior to installing their clutch.

If you resurface the fw, you *must have it ground and not lathed.*--Don't forget to have it balanced too. It must also be broken in for 500 miles in order to retain the 120 day warranty (which btw kicks in from date of purchase, and not date of installation) but that's pretty standard.

If you did all of this and are still slipping, then there is a legitamate problem. Otherwise, there are many potentials for user error here.

I called spec on friday and told them my situation. They asked if i had it installed professionally i said yes and they asked if the flywheel was resurfaced, and i said yes. Then they asked if i drove it easy to break it in. I said for the first 600 miles then i tried boosting and it slipped. SO he tells me " drive it harder and more agressively" so the clutch will break in fully. If it is still slipping in a week we will take it from there. So we will see what happens.

that's kind of bass-ackwards advice from them based on what I would think, but who am I?

Was your fw resurfaced with a grinder or lathe?

what became of this?

between $70-$90, but the problem is having a shop that will accept a job that depends on someone else's quality of work. I had a hell of time finding a shop in Madison (city of 200K ppl) that would even take on the potential liability.

I found it to be easier to buy the pre-welded LSD from Ken @ Protege garage, and then clean and have welded the one which was removed to then sell that to someone and make some of your money back on the back-side. This also reduces labor time b/c you are just giving them a part to put right back in.
