We Bought Our Mazda5!

I just thought I would update everyone ...

My local dealer wouldn't give me over auction price for my trade (a 2001 Saab 9-5 Wagon) so we drove it to Chicago area and pimped it there. We haggled with the dealer who originally told me that he would get me a great trade-in because of his location and then totally low-balled us. We walked out, leaving our business card behind. He called the next day with an offer that was $2300 higher and we drove back out to seal the deal. By 2 PM we were driving our 2006 5-spd manual Mazda6 Touring in Whitewater Pearl into Chicago for the Cubs game. We had to parallel park it 5 blocks from Wrigley Field within the first hour of ownership ... boy we were glad it isn't a huge minivan! In fact, it is the same length as our 9-5 so parking was quite easy.

We have 800 miles on the car in 6 days and our first tank of gas clocked in at 27 MPG. The second tank had a lot of stop and go driving on it, so we only got 25 MPG. So far everything is great! We found the dimmer for the display when the lights are on and we loaded up the CD changer with an audio book. The radio is quite sensitive and I can get WGN and the Cubs clearly 150 miles away even in the daytime. I was very happy to see that the radio also had a button to find the strongest signals in the area. This is something our Saab had and I was going to miss it on long trips in unfamiliar territory. The car shifts easily with only 2 fingers and the clutch is smooth. The cockpit was comfortable from the start. It's as if everything is exactly where it should be and easy to find.

Negatives so far have been covered here before. The lack of the passenger seat arm rest makes my husband try to put his arm on the driver's side arm rest. Not a good idea with a manual transmission in traffic! My daughter also complained that the a/c didn't make it back to her in the 95-degree heat of the hottest days of the year. She was in the 2nd row and not even in the 3rd row. We cranked the a/c as much as we could and told her the car would be cool soon and it was. Just not fast enough for a hot 6 year-old. I was also disappointed that the 2nd row could not fold forward with the central storage area between the seats.

Other than that ... everything is good. We're waiting for a cover for the back wagon area and the step cover for the back bumper.

Congrats! Glad to hear that you're enjoying it as much as we do! 10K miles and going strong!!

As for the AC, I've found that 1) once we tinted the windows the car did not get as hot and 2) if I closed the left and right side vents the air blew more strongly out of the center vents which if facing center and pointing up managed to cool down the rear much more quickly. Since doing these 2 things the kids haven't complained even in 95 degree weather!

Going along with the tint suggestion, one of these may not be a bad idea either... especially considering the large, sweeping size of the 5's windshield. This one's an official Mazda accessory, so should be able to be bought through your dealership.

Oh, and BTW, congrats!(first)

Don't forget to put the A/C on with the re-circulation button - it really helps get the air in the cabin cooler, especially when the outside temp is over 90F.

Oh yeah - and welcome to the 5 club!! Congrats!!:)

Very true.

Recently, I sat in the 3rd row and I was surprised that by using miatafied's method, I could feel the cool air in the back.

The AC on these doesn't do much at idle speed, but as soon as you actually start to drive it picks up fine. I am pretty sure there are vents under the front seats for warming the feet of the people in the 2nd row, I'll have to check to see if putting it on mixed feet mode while on AC blows any air out of them...

The lack of the other arm rest is a mystery to me too.

Thanks for the tips on the a/c. I'll try to close the vents next time I need to get the air back to my daughter.

BTW, someone hit us already! We have a scratch in our bumper and our right rear quarter panel was slightly askew. My husband was able to pop it back into place.

Actually the lack of a passenger side arm rest makes sense given that there is a center console storage area. If the passenger had an armrest, then the center console storage would be inaccessible. If you look at the console. the cover is designed to still open with the drivers armrest deployed. If there was a passenger arm rest the access would be really bad.

I keep reading about the lack of inner arm rests on the second row. My 5 has inner arm rests for the second row seats

I think they probably meant the outer row :)

Yep - it's the outer that's missing. I sat back there last night and it really is noticable. In most cars it's part of the door, but with the slider they forgot that part. I put my arm on the top of the door, but it was a little too high and a little far away. I still can't believe how much shoulder room there is back there.

I think it's hogwash, but I heard the lack of outer 2nd row armrests is due to the side airbags.

I don't think the second row has airbags in the chair. Just the curtain airbag. Putting an arm rest in the outer part of the seat is problematic as People would tend to hang up on them when they try to exit/enter ( I think mazda was trying to avoid potentially a lot of warranty repairs here). Putting then on the door is also a problem, means the slider has to move further out before it slides back. Also because of the roll down window an arm rest cant be recessed into the door!

PS. I just had a look at a few minivans online. The outer armrest on the second row isn't there on many of them (not in the door either) so I don't know why people are complaining. It seems to be a side effect of having a slider

I just checked into Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Nissan Quest, Dodge Caravan, Ford Freestar, Kia Sedona... they all had 'em. Chevy Uplander was the only one I cam across that did not. What others did you find?

So does the MPV, both middle seats have double arm rest.
