Water Leak during rain

For the past year, a few of us aussies have been experiencing a very annoying problem in that when driving in heavy rain or after a car wash, water leaks into the car.

Its usually around the clutch area and the flow of water increases as you depress the clutch pedal.

Have checked around the windscreen area for any possible obstructions.
Car is never parked near trees so leaves can be ruled out. Also tried turning the fresh air vent off but that doesnt help.

All i know is that its coming through the firewall...

Has anyone had the same problem and found a cure for it????

I'll guess it's a windshield seal leak. I had a brand new car with this issue. Water came in, ran down the firewall behind the dash and onto the floor. That's where I'd start.

i jsut bought a used 2003 323 and am pretty sure i have the exact same problem.

any help you can offer would be great.

i know what ur talking about i had the same car, its not a windshield of or cloged, the part under the windshield is rusted and has a hole in it the water leaks throu it...i had the same problem...as a matter of fact i still got the problem

Hi all
I have just fixed the same leak on my 2003 SP20 today after 2 weekends of looking.

The leak is where the clutch pedal bracket is spot welded to the fire wall, 2 of the spot welds have cracked on mine.

To fix remove the wipers the remove the bonnet seal then take of the moulding at the bottom of windscreen. Give it a good clean so you can see the spot welds which are above the position of the clutch.
Then just fill the cracks with silastic.

water leak on 626

I have the same problem with my 1999 model 626, 2 spot welds have a slight tear but after covering with insulation tape, water stopped getting in. I'd say this is a manufacturing and/or design fault. The next car I buy will be checked in this area to see if it applies to other manufacturers. So Far I've had 2 cars leak in the firewall, one was an '82 Honda Accord and the other my current '99 mazda 626. To spot this fault you need to take the wiper cowling off(take off wiper blades first with 12mm socket), the cowling just pulls off. Clean the drivers side of all dirt so that you can see spot welds making a circular formation. On the other side of these welds is something positioned above the clutch pedal on the inside of the car. I haven't yet pulled the car apart to see what is causing enough stress to fail the spot welds but considering the number of weld points it's something that carries a heavy load.

my car is also leaking above the clutch pedal during heavy rains, I'll check have to check that out. thanks

Assuming my car has a cracked spot weld on the firewall where the clutch bracket attaches, how long could I expect the clutch bracket to last if I didn't fix it? what if I fixed it with silica?

Whilst water leaking is an issue for me, I'm more worried that this problem will cause worse issues in the near future?

Thoughts?
