warning (of sort)

I've been following this for a while now. So just to make sure, it's the exhaust cam that's causing all the issues right? There are no sensors or pickups on the intake cam? I've wanted to upgrade cams and consequently cam gears (because no cam is perfect for your setup unless it's custom, and even then it's not longer perfect if you change something else). If it's only the exhaust cam that's the problem then that shouldn't be an issue for me I think. It is the intake cam where the most gains for F/I occur right?

you might still want to advance both or retard both to shift the powerband around...

i'd look at getting your stocko's remanufactured ...

mazdaspeed20035 has SR's here's what he told me yesterday...
"SR Motorsport Adjustable Cam Gears, they are awesome, no problems at all running them.."
(dunno)

i dunno about that man...check out the pics of the sr gears next to kas gears...
the basic mode of operation is the same...the pickups rotate with the advance/retard of the gears.... which is, as we've established here, one of the major problems with the kas gears....

anyone ever talk to kas about his gears? he was running them as well...or at least he said he was?

at 0 and 0 the cam gears work....kinda...the signal isn't great but the engine will run....so it is possible to chuck them on and THINK everything is hunky dory.

the problem occurs when you start moving the cam gears around....even a degree or 2 out will cause a huge signal problem, or a worse the engine plain just wont run...

(hand) great so having adj cam gears at this point is out....i might just slap them on there and see what happens at 00

you'll get signal problems somewhere between 2000 and 3500rpm....i can tell you that much
after market ecu may be able to compensate if you can program the pickups (haltech, for example)....but no guarentees here.

Your best bet is to get remanufactured stocks, simillar to Twilightprotege's (which are the old tripoint style adjustable cam gears if memory serves)....
these have the rotating part of the gear further inside, leaving a large stationary outer ring, with the stock pickups in place....

an engineer of some sort should be able to help you out ;)

That's strange because the only problems I had with the SRs on was starting and idling. I had them set halfway between NA and FI spec. Cruising and accelerating was never a problem, always smooth. With the stock pulleys, it starts and idles fine, but sometimes misses a bit while cruising or lightly accelerating through about 2,400rpm, usually when still cold. I figure it might be just to do with the overlap. The throttle body heater is disconnected too, so that combined with biggish overlap and my weird PCM going closed loop so quick, before even getting any coolant temp could be the problem with low rpm/load drivability. Only a very minor issue and I'm O.K. living with it. I'm keeping the SRs as spares for now, just in case I need to change the timing again in future. Unless I get even more broke than I am now...

I think it's more of an issue if you try to program timing around moving pickups... But then, my exhaust cam is advanced (ghetto-style... off by one tooth... a whopping, power-robbing 9 degrees) right now...

Shoot... so it's not the lack of pickups, then... just that the pickups move? Oops... guess it doesn't matter, I'll try the remanufacturing route.

And no, bazooka, I couldn't have gone halfsies with you... I live half-a-world a way... :p

they don't have mail delivery where you live??(scratch)

No, it's just that going halfsies would be more difficult. But after LW's comment, I guess I'm just going to have to go to the machine shop again. :(
