warm up and cool down

this has been covered, i know, but i keep reading differing opinions on the best practice for warming up and cooling down these cars...

some guys let them warm up and cool down for like 5 minutes! this seems a bit extreme... at least for a totally stock car like i have..

it never gets that cold here in southeast texas, sometimes close to freezing...

i crank mine up and let it run for about a half a minute while i get everything ready to leave, then i putt through the neighborhood for another 5 minutes... the car is totally warmed up by then...

then once at work, i let it idle for a bit (usually a minute or so?)...

is this sufficient, or am i missing something here? i don't really want to put a turbo timer on this car, but of course, i will if it is needed...

what is the final consensus on this? for a stock MS3?

That is what I do. I let it warm up until the temp needle starts to move, drive it under 3k and no boost until it is up to normal temp.

For cooling down, I will let it idle for 30-45 seconds before shutting it off.

From what I understand, the vehicle only needs to technically warm up for about 30-45 seconds. The warmth is not the issue, it is the flow of liquid to all parts of the engine. Once the liquid is flowing, drive with no boost until the temp gauge starts to move and go easy on it for a couple minutes. You can extend the "Going easy on it" portion for more time if it is really cold, like it is here.

-5*F this morning... BOOO. I let it warm up for a good 5 minutes this morning because of it. And surprisingly I didnt even get the nasty suspension crunch while driving, which i have before in +9*F

I do the same. Warm up for a few minutes, and keep it under 3 with no boost until its an norm op temp. For shutdown, i don't do anything unless I have boosted right before. Then I let it idle for 30 seconds or so for the turbo's sake.

I don't do anything different than any other car. I let it warm up for 5 minutes or so at -20 to get the oil up to pumpable liquidity, same with anything else. In the summer I let it idle for a bit before shutting it down if I've been romping on it just before. In the winter, there is no way to even use boost so I don't worry about any cool down.

i warm it up till needle passes those first 2 or 4 lines and drive it under 3 till fully warmed......

just turn it on and redline it until its warm. thats what i do !

Also, the clutch pedal is only something to use sometimes, it is an option that comes on some cars. Just grab the shifter and cram it into the next gear. No pedal necessary.

I get in start the car, put on seat belt, then drive off, the car will warm up as you drive, did that this morning and it was -10*. unless your at the track or really driving hard you dont really need to let the car cool down, if you want 10-30sec is all you'd need anything else and your just wasting gas.

The only warm up I do is for me, not the car. Drive it gently 'til the gauge gets to normal. These twenty-degree mornings, it idles for five minutes or so to give ME some heat. Over forty? Start it up and go. Never beat on it while it's still cold.

Warm up of over a minute is just excessive. I usually let it idle for no more than 30 seconds or so regardless of outside temp. in the mornings. Cool down is about the same, 30 seconds unless I've been romping on it just before I pull up to the driveway.

Ditto.

I turn it on to accessory mode for 5 seconds to let the fuel lines pressurize and let it go thru its system start up and checks. Then just fire it up and go, keep it under 3K rpm until the temp gague is at operating temp.
