VolksWagon, Bad quality?

I hear a lot of bad things about volkswagon cars, I just wanted to know what you guys thought of them? Personal experiences etc.

P.S. still looking forward for my Mazda 6s(thumb)

I did just for fun. I went thru 3 or 4, they are not as knledgeable as the people in these forums, I just wanted to know what people here thought.

my friend has 1.8t jetta. It has some wierd gremlins, like some days it just won't start or anything. Been to the dealer a couple times and they replace random parts but nothing seems to fix it. Although inside, the build quality is very tight and appears to be of high quality materials. Thats the extent of my experience with vw.

In '95 or '96, I bought a brand new VR6 Jetta. Within a month it had left me stranded twice. The electrical system sucked. I'd be driving normally, when all the gauges and lights would go out, then after about 5 minutes, the car would die. Lemme tell ya, it's pretty scary on Hwy 17 at night when all your lights go out, and you know you have about a mile before you're gonna stop...turn out or no turn out.(loser)

After about 9 months of this happening all the time(I took the VW tech for a ride on day and the car died. We had to call a tow truck), we just gave the damn thing back. Luckily for us the Lemon Law was still in effect after 9 months of BS.

Damn, that VR6 sounded sweet, though.

VWs are real big around here. I never really hear alot of complaints about them having problems, but the complaint I hear from all my VDub friends is that when something does go wrong VW rapes you on service charges.

i heard the engineering is tip top because its german but the assembly is the bad part because theyre put together in mexico

My friend's GF bought an 03' 1.8T Jetta. It has about 15,000 miles on it. The only problem was the stereo stopped working and they replaced the deck under warranty. Nice damn car, it's the loaded trim level, forgot the name.

VW are good cars, there's a bunch of people at my work who are really happy with their Jetta,s Passats, and one Beetle. I think they are overpriced for what you get.

When my folks were looking at the 3, they also test drove the Golf, it was underpowered and more poorly equipped than the 3 and would have cost a couple of grand more.

They are also expensive to repair, but they probably hold their resale value better than a Mazda.

Depends on the motor. The base 2.0 sucks, just like a mazda...hehe.

If you can wait, next year they'll come out with a AWD Mazda 6 with 260hp (around there?)

My sister, her friend, and my brother in law all have Jettas. They all had electrical problems, my sister with the windows as they got stuck open. My brother in law has a 1.8T and had some problem early on that forced him to get towed to the dealer. They wanted to place a formal complaint to VW because of their collective experience. But since those things got fixed they haven't had any problems.
The car is solidly built and the turbo on the 1.8T sounds very nice (heard a gurgling turbo beetle this morning).

In the last few years most of the problems have been fixed. Even the coil packs got fixed. Not sure what's with the negative bias around here.

I'm not a fan of the MKIV 99.5+!
Just don't like the interior and exterior but the engines are awesome besides the 2slow

And the damn coils packs suck- I've used JB Weld on a few of them!

Because they're not Mazdas :p

Like I said, with the cases that I know of, only one was crippling and required towing. But after all were fixed nothing has been wrong. They are solid cars

I've never heard anything wonderful about mazda reliability, but I bought one anyway, knowing I had a basic understanding of how to fix cars so it didn't bother me. My brother's miata had the infamous idle dip with the AC on, my girlfriend had a 626 that broke down so many times she traded it back in in the first 2 weeks. I dunno, everybody has different experiences with car companies.
