VTEC/VVTi/MIVEC tech on Mazda

Some Protege's did get S-VT...the J-spec 1.5L ZL-VE had 130 hp(not bad for a 1.5)..They came in the 99-00 Familia S-Wagons, and some other 3rd gens

Ride in/drive an S2000... then come back and tell me how much you like/hate VTEC. only problem is that it's 250-ish horsepower, but my LX has more torque...

I've always dreamed about a solenoid-based valvetrain, but the problem comes in reliability unfortunately. They'll get it someday.

That Coates spherical valve setup is really cool. Talk about smooth!

VTEC overrated? Misrepresented maybe.

VTEC is a great design, and what would you rather have? 2.0 liter N/A with vtec or without? To put it in perspective that is a potential difference between the protege motor and s2k motor.

thank you.
anyone who owned a vtec car will know how good it is.
i'm coming off 2000 Si......i loved it when vtec kicked in, and with vtec controller it's even more fun.

It's funny when people bash VTEC when they don't even know how it works. Obviously few of you have driven a LS/VTEC swap or a B18C/B20 swap...those fuckers are quick buisness.

I agree with you. I've seen a Civic with an H22A swap run(I believe that's the engine code,Prelude engine nonetheless) . Fast [shizzle]. Problem is there is a large population of Honda owners that "word drop", touting VTEC is the answer to all power adders..."Just wait 'till I get my VTEC controller !". Or worse they stick VTEC badges on EX and DX Civics. That's usually why I throw up a big bah humbug and show them taillights. Me personally I like Toyota's VVT-i system better.

after driving an S2k, vtec is awesome. you feel all the power up to about 6500rpms, then it kicks in and it's like an added boost. now, vtec for an accord is a different story, didn't have that feeling whatsoever. It does help and heck, S2k is just a 4cylinder engine yet does 240hp stock.

why doesn't someone just produce a reverse-Jacob's brake (jake brake)

it controls the exhaust valve to open at different times to make the cylinder make no or very little power, so couldn't they do this to just open valves for longer?

not to mention the technology has been around for AGES

What mechanism does it use to push the valve open? Got pics or more info?

Sorry, but I have to:
