Does anyone know of a legend for the CX-9 VIN?

I'm in the market for a CX-9 and it would be handy for verifying models, features, etc, especially on vehicles that are not close to me.

Thanks,
Evan

Unfortunately, there is no vin decoder out there that will tell you if a CX-9 is a Sport, Touring or GT (Grand Touring) unless you call the dealer, talk to the parts department and give them the vin, then they should be able to tell you.

For a guide, here is the most useful info for you:

Sport: Cloth seats, halogen headlights, no foglights, 18" wheels
Touring: Leather seats, halogen headlights, no foglights, 18" wheels
Grand Touring: Leather seats, xenon headlights, foglights, 20" wheels.

There are other small differences, but these are the ones that stick out like a sore thumb. Alot of times CX-9's will be listed improperly online, with the wrong trim level listed, but all you have to do is look at the pictures and the pictures will tell you which trim level it has.

Good luck!

This is directly from WorkShop manual.
This decodes more than a general purpose decoder.
(still can't tell a Sports from GT - for that, you need dealer's computer to check serial #)

Example:

JM3 TB 2 8 A * 8 0 12345

JM3: (World manufacturer ID) Mazda (multi-purpose vehicle category)
TB: (Carline) Mazda CX9
2: (Chassis type) 2=2WD 3=4WD
8: (Body) multi-purpose vehicle
A: (Engine) 3.7L, MZI 3.7, V=California, A=Federal/Canada
*: (Check digit): 0 to 9, X (any number)
8: (Model Year) 8=2008
0: (Plant) 0=Hiroshima, 1=Hofu
12345: Serial #

In general, VIN does not encode "trim level". Only model, year, plant, maker, engine, chassis. The rest of info
is in the serial #.

I was hoping that the trim level was in there, but at least the transmission is. Some craiglist ads list the VIN but not trim or transmission, so I was hoping the VIN could save me time.

Thanks for the info.

Helbigtw - I don't want to waste your time unless I actually need the info, what else might you be able to tell me from a VIN?

Geez, just went through a bunch of ads and that VIN info has been a huge help. There's a higher percentage of ads than I realized that post the VIN but not 2wd/AWD. I'd waste a lot of time sending emails without knowing JM3TB2 is 2wd.

Evan, once you have a car that you think might be "the one," if you want to share the vin via pm - I have many tools at my disposal that help alot, I can tell if the vin is a false vin, can see insurance reports on accidents that don't show up on carfax, also I can see how many owners its had, etc

That would be great, thanks for the offer. I'll be in touch once I find something that is likely to work out.
