Very rough idle. Almost stall

2002 Mazda Protege 5 at 102K. Automatic trans. Very rough idle, wants to stall. Drops about 2-3 RPMs regularly. Only at idle. Timing belt, idle air control valve, and air boot replaced recently. No good. Getting worse. Accessories off or on - doesn't matter. Warm or cold - doesn't matter. Now beginning to show signs of rough (jerky, hesitating) shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Mechanic at dealership told me that this is just a "twitchy engine." (Right!(scratch)) They couldn't find anything wrong, no error codes. Could it be the EGR valve, or is that what the idle air control valve is? Also read some posts here that say the timing belt could be off a tooth. No CEL. Driving at regular speed, no problem. Help! No garage (or skill for that matter) for DIY repair. Anyone have any ideas?

Put in 2 new coils packs, spark plugs and leads. If that does not work try cleaning your EGR valve or buy a new canada one.

Mine had almost the same issue, except mine did stall out a couple of times. Fortunately, on local roads without heavy traffic. After cleaning the EGR, the problem went away.
