Very disappointed..

So at what point did you think the P5 would be a excellent sports car or a track beast? Was it the big whoopin 130HP? or the 135ft-lbs of torque? FWD?

These cars are ment to be a daily driver...I don't see a point in spending $1,000s on a car to get you into the 170-180HP range. The only thing sporty about these cars are the looks, and the suspension.
I agree dog, I got this car for looks and it handles like a fukin go kart, lil mods are good but I wouldn't exxagerate w/it. You want speed get a Sport bike. LOL. Jus' ****** w/u.

Hmm,.. once I get the trany back from chryno treatment for the max I'll prob forget about the P5 then when summer hits and I'm all in my Supra then I'll prob forget about both P5 and Maxima. I'm the kind of guy who needs speed 24/7. Yeah the P5 is my daily fetch a part car during the week then when weekend's comes around I'm always at the meets and everyone knows me for my Max and my supra. So I get challenged in my P5 all the time now that I'm not in those cars and it's hella annoying.

Today I just came from the shop and I took a look at the rods of another P5 I think it was an 02' or 01' not sure but the rod journals are not at all that bad, I mean by the thickness. Only the bottom is off for now but it's the same motor I have right (specs wise). So tomorrow I should take a really good look at the internals and maybe I might see something worth telling but prob not.

I looked in the NA forums but couldn't find the engine specs such as materials used in crankshaft, piston type, valve length etc. etc.. Can anyone point me out to this information. I would appreciate it very much.

I feel ya on the need 4 speed thing. The lack of power can be made up for in a lot of situations where you would need it & I'll leave that @ that so e-riots don't break out about driving habits. I in no way condone breaking any traffic laws to overcome or counteract other driver's actions or take advantage of their ignorance. I favor the supra because I have had a toyota truck for over 21 yrs. I think there is an online manual at ugly.net that may contain some of the information you seek. I peaked into my pdf manual @ technical data under engine section & it had some specs but not really much about materials.

Drive it with yourself inside off a cliff then you wont have to worry about it being slow.. Learn to drive it for one.. if you wanted a faster car then why didnt u buy one? it is pointless to spend thousands on a car for turbo unless you know what your doing, plus nitrous sucks, it ruins any engine in the long run..

After reading a dozen threads on N2O. I came to the conclusion that P5 motors suck. I was planning on spraying it but damn the engine is way to advanced the engine internals are week jesus christ I can't do anything to this car. If I can't simply spray a 50 shot for god sake why in the hell would I put money in this car for more performance. This is my first Mazda and at first I purchased the car to just get to point A to B but after putting the rims, springs, Hi Power Exhaust and SS it handles, sounds good and looks sharp. But that's where it stops. It's slow as hell it falls flat on it's face after 5krpm's.

So besides headers, Catback exhaust and a CAI. What else can someone do to get this car to run in the mid 14's without changing internals or boosting?

Please help I'm suffering from slowinitis.. (puke)

stop saying its slow ..... because all in alll its not really that slow out there..... toss on a few mods and u can compete with most n/a cars........... IHE, underdrive and even cams orso...... now read stuff on the forums everythings here all u need to do is take the time to look @ it........

LOL yeah I wouldn't say the 2.0 is slow, except in a straight line. Spend more time on curvy roads, and leave the highways to the Supra.

No need to call him an idiot, I think he has some valid points. I also believe that he has some sort of car knowledge, so calm down a little. (cheers)

I think the P5 is fairly slow myself. You can not just throw on the normal NA mods and compete with most NA cars. That is Honda engine territory.

Our cars can compete with high level cars when built right.

It is kind of an all or nothing situation if you want a truly FAST daily driver car. If you want a nice daily driver, you could put a turbo on the STOCK engine at 5 to 7 psi.

i wouldnt say that the p5 is hella slow, i mean it does have pretty damn good pick up, and ive hit 110 in my auto p5 (all stock, with roof rack and wind deflector on) so i mean it is a good car, much better when modded up, but still a pretty decent car stock

if u look @ this car when it was built..... it was fast Then. Technology changes everyday. New things are come up or found out everyday. Stop complaining our car is slow, and nonetheless if he knows about cars he wouldnt have bought it. (blowjob)

um...I dunno about that...there's a ton of ppl here that know a ton about cars that bought it. I don't know a TON about cars, but I know enough to get my by, and I bought one...

Simply put, if your goal is to run 10's with any import vehicle purchased stock, look to spend between 5k-10k. The protege is an underdog, that with time, and money can be made to perform with the big boys, its like that 5ft 8inch hockey player that was told he'd never make the nhl.. well.. there will be some that prove them wrong.

And if ya don't wanna put in a lot of money to run 10-12's.. sell the car, buy an 80's honda civic, put 4k into it and run your 12's.

The car does have N/A potential. I would suggest removing excess weight from the drivetrain. Light weight wheels (Sub 11 pounds), lightweight lugs, lightweight crank pulley, and 7 pound flywheel... That unstraps along the order of 30 pounds off of the crank, and that makes a HUGE difference in the feeling of the car.

Next, intake and exhaust need to be dealt with. Header back, take your pick. Intake is up to you, but my suggestion would be to go with a new design of intake manifold. I have a set of ITB's just sitting around, waiting for an ECU. The stock manifold design is 'okay' at best, I'm convinced. Most anything would be an improvement, but really, these changes need to be done in conjunction with an ECU.

Cams need to come at the same time, and you'll want to get a spare head. Work over the exhaust side first and foremost; A lot of material can be removed from there, and should be... The angles therein are a little hairy, too, so those can be smoothed out as well. The cams I went with ended up being in the 270I/280E range, or so, with a touch more lift than stock.

I think the Protege seems slow because a lot of people take a rather conventional approach with tuning it. What I've found thus far, is that the car is just WASTING power, rather than not having it. That, and lots of people strap on oversized/heavy wheels. ;)

Check this out, this is a video of my maxima right after the swap. I tried to blow up my auto transmission before I swap it to the 5spd and at the end of the night I was down to 2 gears barely. (boom04)

There were alot of cars that were much faster when the P5 came out in 02.

Civic SI.
Spec V
Matrix XRS
Corrola S
Z24 Cavalier
Focus SVT
Celica GTS

I can go on...

Corrola S wasn't faster, and had rear drums... Z24, I somehow doubt was faster, really, and was just a piece of crap. The others are acceptable, however, they were in a different price range. I paid 14k for my Protege5. Those cars are more around the 20k range.

The P5 was meant to be a good looking wagon, really. Which it accomplishes. I think the MSP is more in the range of those others you listed.

The Civic and Focus SVT are good, but I don't really like the other ones, especially the Cavaliers.. The Celica GTS has potential (though hardly anyone does those cars well).

corola S had only 108hp at the crank- definetly not faster.
Um...P5's make like 98whp stock at the crank. Hell, my 5 spd made 101whp with a CAI.

And a Z24 will put the hurt on a p5 bad...it has 150hp and 155 torque and weigh 2700 lbs.

P5's were alot more than $16,000 when they came out.
