Cancel and get $200. Only a fool would do anything else. A cell phone provider is a cell phone provider...so cancel and either go with someone else while being $200 richer or just cancel and wait the 3 months (or whatever) and go back to Verizon.

**** a Verizon

My advice to everyone is DON'T DEAL WITH VERIZON

My mother and I both have had verizon service for over..... at least 10 years, if not 12 or 13......

somehow she/I got on verizons s***-list...... verizon ended up changing the 1700 minute plan to a 700 minute plan without our knowing - then we got a $500 bill for 500 too many minutes....
all together over the years she and I both have dropped over $10,000 maybe even $15,000 (maybe $20,000 or more) on them for service, and all they've done is charge us as much as possible.....

my other advice is dont get a free phone - mandatory "2 year service agreements" is bulls***............. buy your own phone - and dont get in any contracts.

Imagine getting just one person to agree to give you $80 per month for the next 2 years.... then imagine having 1 million people in that same contract....

**** a Verizon - get anything else, but don't go thru verizon... you will only regret it.

all those satellites are already paid for - everything after that is all profit for them. there is no reason to still charge people $1 per minute in they go over their allotted minutes.... Greedy blood suckers.

Cancel + refund.

I find it interesting that the one thing they don't seem to be offering is to do what people wanted in the first place ... just unlock the phone's features. Wouldn't that be nice and simple? I guess they'd lose too much money not being able to monopolize your ringtone and wallpaper sources.

thanks for the replies guys.
1. I would be getting 350 form verizon cause thats what i paid and i have the receipt.
2. There are no other good service providers in the area. next best is nextel/sprint but verizon has over 70% of the market in Vermont
3. I could cancel but then i would have to wait 3 months to join again, what do i do in those 3 months? will i be able to keep my number?

Cancel and wait the 3 months IMO. It's just a phone - it's amazing how crazy some people are with cell phones - like they can't live life without one and are willing to spend any amount of money to have one. If you REALLY need a phone (I don't think you do - nobody does), just get a trackphone for a few months. That my opinion anyway.

well i do actually need a phone since i dont have a landline at home. you see here where i live (largest citiy in Vermont) is not like the rest of the world. if you are incomunicado, then you ARE incomunicado.
in short, i DO need a phone and 3 months is unacceptable. I could go with a pay as you go but im not sure that would be cost effective.

My other idea is to just go and get a new phone right now. All i have to do is sign a new contract for 2 years (this is not the "new every two" offer, you get one 'mulligan' per lifetime) Then i cancel, and send the phone back.
Theni have a new phone buut no service, i can just walk in and sign up for month to month with my new phone since i dont need an agreement anymore since the only reason you do that is to get a discount on the phone.
do you think thats doable?

Right on! People freak out about leaving home w/o something they've lived most of their lives without. I have a friend that didn't get a cell phone until this year (and she's 28); even then, she did get one of those pay as you go plans. I envy her in being disconnected all these years....

Bow to the threads that bind.....

OK so you think you need a phone for those 3 months. Does it have to be mobile though? Do have high speed internet at home? If you do, just sign up for VOIP access at somewhere like packet8 - there's a $50 set up fee I think but then it's $22 a month for unlimited calling anywhere in North America and has no fee when you cancel. That could get you through the 3 months and then cancel it and sign up for Verizon again. Just a suggestion.

Word. I'm 30 and have never owned a cell phone. I've had cell phones supplied through work on occasion, but basically never used them. I laugh at all these people that think life requires a mobile phone. Christ I walk through the campus of our local college here and EVERYBODY not only has a cell phone but is talking on it. WTF are all of you people constantly talking about??? Some of you must REALLY love the phone I guess. I just hope you think you're actually getting your $50 a month worth out of it.:)

now we are talking, that is a good idea.
i may go with the VOIP service but it wont replace the cellphone.
I guess it is easy to say what you are saying if you are not used to using a phone all the time. It is probably hard to understand as well and im not gonna try to convince you but you cant judge people for it.
I am away from my house close to 15 hours a day. Im not gonna make my calls at 11 pm or midnight, nevermind 7 am before work. I need to be reachable in case of emergency by relatives and my gf. Believe it or not is necessary, it is kinda sad to be alwats dependant on it but you dont have to. I ignore calls all the time and then check the message to see if it was important and then call back.
Either way, VOIP is a good idea, i may do that. I could probably port my number.

Is there any pre-paid phone offers in your area ?
in december when my verizon contract is up, i dont know what rout i'll go...

but if you get in the "2year" contract, chances are within that 2 years, you wont want to be with them anymore... imho, ya know....
i had a friend tell me t-mobile is good, and boost mobile is s***... so I dont realy know, but I do know that verizon is teh evil.

i got nextel. good times.

never had a problem. phone was broke, i have the monthly insurance plan, took it to a nextel corporate store. they attempted to fix it, couldnt, so they replaced with a new one. free of charge.

i hear you on that. im not staying with verizon because i like it but because it has the largest customer base in the area with the most coverage. in two years i prob wont want to be with them but i wont have a choice so its the same as now.
Nextel is here but their phones blow. Sprint now is here two but their coverage is spotty at wes (im between the adirondacks and the green mountains, there is no service)
that is it

I love my verizon service and also it's reception. none better here in NY.

I'd return phone and get another one but keep verizon.

(dunno)Could be....although I still get plenty of phone calls - and most are just idle chit chat -- certainly not something I'd consider a necessity to live life. But hey, enjoy paying your $50 a month if those chats are important to you.:)

But yeah, to the orig poster, check into VOIP - it's very likely you can port your existing cell number over free of charge and then port it back to you new cell phone when you eventually decide to get one. And there's enough "soft phones" out there that are useable from any computer that you're at least "semi-mobile" then (don't always have to be at home).

yea but when your 30 you can do that, when you travel frequently, go to college, have a job and try to keep some sort of social. Most nights during the week i dont get home till 9pm and weekends i ethier travel, work or out all day. Getting home between 2-4am. I also have a house phone... only call i get on it are telemarketers, im cancelling next month.

Dont go nextel, unless your in a major urban area they suck and in some metro cities they are worse because of buildings. Sprint and nextel are on in the same now and it doesnt look to be getting better. cingular or verizion if you ask me. Cingular customer service is horrid and they have tons of misc charges.

thats what i heard about cingular. not a choice for me anyways, we dont have either cingular nor t mobile here so it doesnt matter.
other opinions please?
