Vavle train noise - New Car

2013 Mazda 2 Sport
Evening guys and gals,

I was merely wondering if Mazda 2 valve train were normally noisy? Brand new 2013 and the noise has been there from the start.

Given now, that between makers; clearances and even differences between say a roller rocker set up and regular rocker arm setup, that noises can vary.

I wouldn't say it sound like out of the ordinary noise, but does everyone have a little bit of valve train noise? ( Mazda 2's use simple lash adjustable rocker arms? )

It's a lot different coming from the roller rocker setup of the S2000's

They are a little noisy, more so when you first fire it up after sitting all night or when it is really cold out.

Yar, I agree. I've noticed that myself. I suppose that's because of the bigger clearances when the engine is still cold? By the way, do you happen to know the type of valve train our 2's have? ( I tried looking it up, but couldn't find specific answers. DOHC... With what kind of bucket, rocker, etc type setup? )

I turned my car on after sitting all day in 10-20 degree weather and I seriously though I had to have lost my oil drain plug cause it sounded so loud lol. Like omg my engine is toast... but then it warmed up. Every Mazda (or Ford Probe for that matter) that I have ever driven/owned has had really noisy valvetrain (rolleyes)

In the parts picture for the Mazda 2 they do not show the shims for the lifters but there is a list of 38 different thickness shims in the parts catalog which I pulled the picture out of.

I know :)

It's is the bucket

The way of adjusting the valves is by changing the buckets with different sizes (2.980 - 3.495mm). ;)

take a close look at the picture that i got when i was measuring the clearances

So, for a valve adjustment, we have to pull everything apart and change the shims? What fun ! ! ! <LOL>

Is there a shim pack we can buy somewhere?

John

That's only IF they need adjustment, I got lucky when I thought my miata needed a valve adjustment. Everything was just about within spec. But I went ahead and swapped in a new cam while I was in there so it wasn't a waste of time.

OK. I'm confused........ (Nothing new there ! ! !)

Do we change the whole bucket or are there shims under the bucket?

Thanks,
John

As i said in post #9, the way of adjusting the valve clearance is by replacing the whole bucket/tappet.

From the service manual:
19. Remove the tappets.

20. Select a proper tappet according to the result of the valve clearance inspection and install it.

As i said in post #9, the way of adjusting the valve clearance is by replacing the whole bucket/tappet.

This seems like it would be more of a pain? Time wise, and if you're clearances were off, a tad more expensive than your normal valve lash adjusting type correct?

Oh and this thread is turning out to be very very helpful. Increasing my knowledge of a car I know hardly anything about.

In fact, it will be much more expensive to replace the tappets/buckets than shims :)

btw, again from the service manual:

Scheduled Maintenance Table

<tbody>
Engine valve clearance:
Audible inspect every 120,000 km (75,000 miles), if noisy, adjust

</tbody>

Mine was completely quiet until 30,000 miles when I switched from Mobil 1 0w-20 to mazda 0w-20. Now it sounds like a coke can full of gravels for the first 10 seconds when you start it in the winter.

Because of the nature of the bucket tappets which our car has, it is normal to hear the valves in the first few seconds after a cold start up in the winter especially if you haven't start the engine for over 2 days .

Is there any reason that made you go from Mobil1 to the Dexelia?

AN7, Thank you for the info and the clarification ! ! !

This is going to make a valve adjustment a pain in the butt. Not only the process, but getting the tappet buckets. My closest dealer is about 100 kilometers away.........

Regarding oil. I no longer use Mobil 1 after getting and looking at magnetic drain plugs. Going to Castrol cut the metal deposits on the magnets to a third over the Mobil 1. As I understand it, Mobil 1 has some problems.
