Effective July 1, in the wonderful Commonwealth of Virginia, any traffic ticket, with the exception of regular speeding, will carry heavy civil penalties in addition to the fine and court costs that you will already have to pay.

Here are just a few...

Driving on a suspended or revoked permit - Civil penalty $750.00 + the court cost & fines

Reckless Driving - Civil penalty $1,050.00 + the court cost & fines

DUI - 1st offense - Civil penalty $2,250.00 + the court cost & fines

Failure to give proper signal - Civil penalty $1,050.00 + the court cost & fines

Leaving the scene of an accident - Civil penalty $3,000.00 + the court cost & fines

This is the website that lists the offenses and how much each civil penalty is. It gives the breakdowns of installments that the state will allow, etc.

Be careful when you drive!!

My understanding is that you have to be convicted of a driving offense already considered a misdemeanor or felony. Anyone that gets a ticket for any of the offenses listed above should get ****** IMHO.

So if you drive 20 over (reckless) you get dinged with a huge fine. Not sure this is any worse than the possible jail time and loss of license already associated with a reckless.

If it helps people drive responsibly then so be it.

yea im all for everything except the failure to give propper signal i mean it seems like the police are the ones 90% of the time not using signal i wonder if that applies to them too

its total bullshut but that isn't anything new in the state of virginia. The only thing this is going to do is help VA fill its pocket with more money. I wouldn't be shock if this is to help VA raise more money for them to cover the cost of the countries universal ID(Real ID) which is suppose to take in effect in 08.(hand)

1K for failure to signal!! DANG!
Well, that's just for felony failure to signal. WTF about failing to signal could make it a felony???

Also, this is from the bill, at least they're honest about it:

(2) Purpose. The statute states the purpose of these fees is to generate revenue from drivers whose proven dangerous driving behavior places significant financial burdens upon the Commonwealth.
I'm curious if you could fight this in court by arguing that your driving behaviour isn't financially burdening the Commonwealth?

BTW, to me, this looks like a good reason not to move back to VA!!

its not a felony is it i thought it was just a civil offense?

If you read the bill to the bottom, it lists the civil offense fines for various crimes. If you are convicted of "failure to signal - misdemeaner", it's a $300 additional fine. If you are convicted of "failure to signal - felony", it's a $1000 additional fine. I'm still wondering how failure to signal gets to be a felony?

sounds like somebody doesnt know what the stalk on the left of the steering wheel does. should i post a how-to?

i think you should it would be funny

I was talking to a friend about this the other day and we were wondering the same thing: "WTF is felony failure to indicate proper signal?!" We figured this would be something tacked onto reckless driving (how many ppl dangerously weave through traffic and still use their blinkers?). I don't think any of these should be a problem for us. The big fines are for the big offenders - did you see the amount for DUI now, now that's painful!
