V6 FWD Swap??

I agree

Yeah, it was a combination of first offense reckless driving ticket and speeding ticket two weeks later. they took my license and made me "high risk".

anyway, i'm not looking to resell the car, I already know its out of the question. The car got hit in the first month I had it which leaves me with even less resale value.

friends say do the mazda6 engine. I really don't know anything about it, but I had heard someone post saying no way in hell it will fit, forget it.
I hadn't heard any rave reviews on it, or anything notable, so it wasnt really on my mind.

The 3.5 with stillen exhaust just sounds so sick, its like a g35, it has a sound unique to its own.

I just read SCC, and there was a Miata with a Nissan 4 banger in it (SR20DET), with ~250whp. Maybe that would be a better swap? Course then you get to do the mods to make a Protege RWD.

hell if I know,
be different!

the mazda3 v6 will not fit and none of the electronics would match - the brakes, the throttle, the valve timing is all controlled electronically for which there are no provisions in the protege. even with the mazda6 ECU, the protege gas pedal simply won't interface with the mazda6's throttle by wire system.

if you want a simpler v6 then go with the mazda KL-ZE. the probe used the american KL engine, the mx3 had a mazda v6 option in it, so I see no reason why the protege, by all rights a 'cousin car' to the probe, would not be able to take the KL-ZE. Corksport sells the KL-ZE with all appropriate wiring and they are very nice engines that make good power.

By the by, you're not going to be able to retain the stock ECU any way you go. =) Standalone only. Hehee. I still say an Mid engine, Rear drive Protege5 would rock.

KLZE in a P5 would rock my ******* socks off. Add a thomas knight supercharger to that b**** and you would be rolling in the 13's eeeeeezeeeeee. And, it would most definitely be a much easier swap than a nissan bluebird SR20 or a 3.5 V6.

13's? On a 10:1 compression motor? Try 12's. I know someone that turbo'd a ZE'd PGT and ran a 12.9 @ 118 spinning through 1st, 2nd and a lot of 3rd. That was only @ 9.5 psi.

s*** the 1st gen proteges with the KL-ZE swap run high 12's low 13's N/A!
in a 3rd gen which is much heavier i would say high 13's low 14's.. i would just keep it stock wit the kL. 200 hp is enough for me

what about a KF-ZE (2.0l 170hp v6) what would that be like in a protege?? i was thinking about this as a possible swap. what does this rev to?

How about this? The set up from the upcoming MazdaSpeed 6. The 2.3l turbo 4. They are talking 260hp and 280 ft-lbs. I don't think you would have trouble fitting that in.

That'd be an expensive swap. You can find a ZE engine/tranny combo for less than $1500. Hell, sometimes less than $1000. Besides, he was talking about a V6 swap. :)

KL-ZE is good for more power, 210+hp from the factory

195-200, dependent on the year. ;) It's still a rev-happy motor. Believe me, you've never driven anything like a modded K-series V6.

what ever became of this? Any updates?

I'm working on dropping a mildly warmed over (cams, intake, tb, exhaust, pulleys) KLZE into my 95 tracer station wagon as we speak. I'm dissecting an MSP transmission which is going to be used to rebuild the MX-3 tranny thats going in. That with a conservative 75-100hp shot of nitrous should get me moving pretty good. :)
