Used P5 asking prices seem skyhigh

I'm going to be selling my P5 whenever I get around to fininshing my S70. Wow, and I thought asking $7200 for my car was a lot, but then again most of you guys are scared to buy a car thats been wrecked. But when I do sell it, if the person buying it can get over it, I think $7200 is a pretty good deal. You guys are right though, I went to Mazda to see what they would give me if I bumped up to an RX-8 and all they offered was 8k.

I worked at a dealer until last week and we paid in the region of 12,000 to 12,500 for p5's with average miles and in good condition. Then they were sold for around 14,000. Considering that a dealer has to recondition, pay commission, and everything else assosiated with running a business, $2,000 is not a bad mark-up.

Anyways, I owed 10k on mine and got 15k for it. Which means that I only paid $1,500 to have a P5 for 24 months and 37,000 miles. That is awesome resale value if you ask me...

i'm actually in the LA area (pasadena) as well, and i was looking into getting a used P5 (that's why im skulking around the forums here). if you had any pics or could shoot me a ballpark price i'd be very interested.

Oh, and one thing to watch out for is the dealers who talk about all the extras the car has. There were very few options on the P5: moonroof/6 CD, auto, leather, ABS/side airbags, that was it. Everything else came stock w/ the car. Also, the 2002 had a 36K/3 yr warranty, the 2002.5-2003.5 had a 48K/5yr. warranty.

I bet the first manual p5 was in a wreck.. it has a sedan front bumper cover!

Exactly my point. The seller wants $8900 for a wrecked car with the incorrect front end on it. I'm not looking for someone elses problems.

I completely understand as a seller trying to cover what they owe on a car loan. That's what would be best for you.... BUT.... How is that my problem?

If someone got a 5 year loan or had bad credit and made minimum payments and now owes more than the car is worth why should I pay more? That's not in my best interest.

We're looking for some now and will begin the process of haggling with dealers. We'll see what happens.

It was actually a 4 yr/50k mile, same as current Mazda's I believe...

That sucks. People like that ruin it for me and other guys, who even though are selling a car that has been wrecked before, sweated their balls off making sure everything was right. For example, when I fixed my car, I used all Mazda parts, did the work as if I would be driving the car(I was going to),spent more time doing it than any mechanic or bodyshop would, yet it would take me a lot to convince someone that the car is in better shape than most non-wrecked cars.

I understand your point and the passion you put into making your car like-new again but the fact is, most cars that are in accidents are never the same again.

Sure, you may have replaced everything with genuine Mazda parts but when a car gets T-Boned for example, the doors never close the same. You get creaks, mis-aligned panels, and other problems. When a car gets rear-ended at 15-30mph everything in the car is jolted and rattles begin to occur months after the accident. Getting hit on the front quarter of the car usually results in endless alignment problems. Do I have to continue?

Anyway, unless the accident was truely minor (a scuff on the bumper for example) then people have the right to know it was in an accident and they shouldn't have to pay top dollar for it. It's damaged goods, end of story.

Update:

Well, I went with my wife last night to a dealer and she liked the Black P5 we looked at. After haggling and such we ended up buying a '02 for $11,600.

In our area there are no clean cars for under $12,000. It would have ben nice to pick one up for $10K or $11K flat but everything we've seen in that range has very high miles or damage. We saw an '03 for $12K but it had a cracked windshield and no inspection and body damage.

It would have been great to get a "steal" for a clean P5 but after driving her to and from work in our only car - the miata - it was time to pay what everyone else is paying...

I wish i lived in a different part of the country because the car market is higher out here.

Good thing is that they are doing all small ding repair and pro touch up and interior cleaning now and we'll pick it up on Friday.

At least we have our P5 now and can move on to the important things... like mods.

I want my wife to do a few AX events.
It'll give her a good feel for accident avoidance and how the car feels at the limit.
I'm looking for some basic comfort/looks mods right now like tint, leather interior and wheels/tires. I'd like to put some mild springs on but nothing that would make the ride a lot more harsh for her.
Stock it is surprisingly firm and body roll is relatively limited. Power is adequate when in the powerband but you all know this stuff...

I'm glad we got what we wanted.

i have about 3K till mine expires.....about a couple months with the low miles i have been putting on!
