Used P5 asking prices seem skyhigh

Do people just never look at what their car is worth in the real world? In my area all I can find are dealers and private owners asking about $4,000 over blue book. It's rediculous. I want one but I'm not going to be the sucker who pays that much...

Are people really buying them at these prices, some with close to 50K on tham?

Make your offer to the dealer/private owner. If they don't give you what you want, walk away. That simple. Forget about what they are asking, all prices are negotiable.

The values of P5's did go back up though. They took a huge hit when the 3 came out, but they have gone back up as the dealers cleared them out. Same thing happened with the MSP. About this time last year, mine was worth about 10,700 according to Edmunds and KBB. Now the price is back in the 14,000's. My insurance co just paid me an even $15,000 for mine, 2003 with 37,000 miles and all Mazda options except auto and polished wheels...

I'm at the point where i will be going from dealer to dealer with my fist full of cash and say I want that car for this much, take it or leave it.

I know for a fact that these jokers only paid around 7-8K if that on the trade ins.

Unfortunately the P5 has been holding it's value very well. I regularly read about people paying $9K-11K or more for used P5s. I've seen people pay more than I paid for mine new.

You could get a turboed P5 for $7K.... ;-)

Oh, and one thing to watch out for is the dealers who talk about all the extras the car has. There were very few options on the P5: moonroof/6 CD, auto, leather, ABS/side airbags, that was it. Everything else came stock w/ the car. Also, the 2002 had a 36K/3 yr warranty, the 2002.5-2003.5 had a 48K/5yr. warranty.

It is bad in the sense that most P5 owners who trade-in their cars are lucky to get $8K for them, then the dealer turns around and jacks the price up and then makes a killing off the buyer. I know that is normal, but it still seems ridiculous to me that someone can buy my car w/ 25K miles on it for only about $1K less than I paid for it new. This started even toward at the end of 2003, there was a Carmax that wanted me to buy their used P5 for more than I paid for a new one in the color I wanted, and this was before the Mazda3 came out. I'm not too concerned w/ the resale value myself beyond making sure what I owe on my loan is less and if I ever am in an accident and the car has to be totaled.

Dealer around OH offered me 11,5 for a trade in....I thought that was low as KBB stated it was around 13K.

Thanks Katya, I mentioned it to my wife but she's wary of a car that's had many panels replaced, and any hidden problems that may be there.
I'm also wary of getting a car that has been side-swiped, suspension issues never go away. For something like that it'd have to be at a steal of a price. Not saying it would not have been perfect but I prefer not to deal with some things.

Anyhow, I'm looking for a car for my wife as a daily and we plan on keeping it for a good while. I'll bug some of the dealers and give them my offer and leave.

yes i guess if your trading in a such then yea but if your selling it or still making payments than its good to have positive equity, as well as getting a good price from a person

hey im willing to put my 03 Protege5 up for sale, aslong as i get what i owe on it. i bought it in october of 03 and it has 28K on it. moonroof, 6cd changer, cloth interior, midnight blue exterior, 16" polished alloys and i will include the neons i have for it. Asking price is about 9-10 thousand. I think it's great that the p5's value has gone back up. Positive equity on payments is good, but if you think about it, if the p5's value was 4k less, that would be passed along to you when it came to trade-in time anyways. I'm rather amazed that the p5 is holding resale value, especially since according to Road and Track a couple years ago, the p5 only had "average" resale value...
