2013 Mazda CX-9 Touring
Great news, I put a bunch of MP3s on a thumb drive and plugged it into my 2013 Madza CX-9 USB port (which connects to the base radio, not the BOSE system) and it was able to pull the songs as well as the meta data and display that on the touchscreen.

If I touch the shuffle button, the songs are shuffled through the same order every time. There is no randomness about it. This is annoying as when I get in my car and drive 15 minutes, I hear a few songs. When I get back in my car, I hear the same few songs.

Is there a way to randomize the shuffle?

After doing a google search, it appears as though this is a well documented problem. It is interesting that most people complain about it on 2014 CX-5s and not so much with the 2013 CX-9. I can confirm, it is a problem on the CX-9 as well. While google seemed to yield some results about Mazda recognizing the problem I cannot find proof of that on the Mazda site.

Sent an e-mail to Mazda. They recognize the problem. They are more concerned about bluetooth connectivity to the iPod it sounds like, but they are also "working" on an acceptable solution to the "problem" I pointed out. According to Mazda, the unit is operating within spec (hence the quotations above, not sure they are really working on it, as it does not sound like they consider it a problem) but they understand spec may not be acceptable to a minority of users...unfortunate.

Although this is not ideal, you can work around the problem by creating a playlist (M3U) on your computer with MP3 software like winamp or something. You can then shuffle/randomize the order, and save it under another name. I did that four or five times. Now in the car you can just pick from between the playlists. When you get bored with the order, do it again. I don't consider this a permanent solution, but it at least gives me something while I wait for Mazda to fix it.
