USB port charging issues

Has anyone had any issues using the USB port? I have the Galaxy S3, and on multiple occasions when I've had my phone charging while synced to the bluetooth playing music, the charger will start to pulse between charging and not charging every second. I also tried my friends Galaxy S3, his had the same reaction so I know it isn't just my phone. Maybe it's something with Android, or the GS3 itself. Anyone else seen this issue?

I'm not sure how much current the USB port is designed to deliver. It may not keep up with the current load of the S3 depending on what all you are running. If you are not actually using the USB port to play music, you might be better off with a car charger, or a USB adapter plugged into a power port. I generally find that plugging my iPhone into the USB just causes more hassle than it's worth when Bluetooth works so well. I plug the phone into a power port for charging

My Nexus 4 will not charge when connected to the USB.
The car will not recognize it for USB playback. For playback, it will only recognize phones with 'Mass Storage Device', which only older Android phones support (MTP/PTP is supported by newer phones).
I'll try 2 other phones later this evening to see

It will charge 2 older Android phones that I had my hand on, though I think (not sure) only when the sound system is on, past boot.
After more testing I verified that the N4 will charge only when it is off ... will not charge when on. Perhaps it is related to the amount of juice the system provides to the phone.

The USB port provides 5v whenever the car is powered on and for approximately 10 seconds after the car is powered off.

i dont think that port was designed with charging devices in mind, it probably has very minimal current, just enough to power thumbdrives which is what its designed to do, not provide power to devices...

The USB port will charge my iPhone5, but results in lots of other undesirable behavior. I put a USB adapter in the 12v port inside the center console -- I have not had any issue charging with that.
