US Diesel's big splash introduction

Why wouldn't you own another?

I've never had a VW myself, but hold nothing against a company just because they cheated on emissions, or is there another reason.

*Just* because they cheated on emissions which in turn gave them a very unfair competitive advantage (look ma no piss tank)to the extent that almost no one bothered including Mazda which made (makes) them look incompetent until they can deliver and even then is it too little too late through the eyes of many.. That's before we factor in all the unwanted nox they emitted and how they made diesel the Vicky Vallencourt aka the debil of modern vehicle propulsion. I'm not nieve and understand business is business but this was a blatant and reckless breach and I will not only never own or lease a VW, but also Audi or Porsche. It was and still is a pretty big deal.

And I think their vehicles are generally unreliable crap and good luck when they do break..so I've heard; )

I have seen good VW sales as they are heavy on incentives. A 17 Tiguan which is smaller gets 23 mpg on premium fuel but has 203 hp base trim is about 17K USD which is cheap, you cant buy an 18 base CX5 for less than 20-21 easily.

Reason buying a VW for me is out of question - Time for me is money. I know someone with a new VW who has been to dealer multiple times due to electrical gremlins. People tout 6 year 72 K mile warranty - yeah if you are alone and have no use for your time and want to spend most of it at the dealer trying to figure out why in the middle of night with no cars around your VW activated all safety lights and whistles - frontal collision / BSM etc. Maybe VW can detect ghosts and are too advanced or as usual their design has inherent flaws which makes owning them a pain. A 2015 Passat still under warranty for 10K sounds good until you roll out of warranty - then its a strain on your marriage life etc.

Th emissions has absolutely nothing to do with it (I didn*t own one during that time, thankfully) Not gonna converse about the long list of why,I*ll just say I had Problem after problem, some so weird even VW couldn*t figure it out. When one thing went, another always followed instantly, not just engine or mechanics wise. Numerous people I know had problem after problem as well...

Pure junk, well besides an old air cooled bug,and I*ll spank everything they*ve produced with it...

Strange the air cooled bug was famous for the engine seizing in the UK, back then my mate worked in a scrap yard and saw a lot of those, I was a Ford Cortina man back then, he provided a couple of engines from the yard which I later fitted into the Mk1.

Because they should be able to have what the rest of the world has. Sick and tired of differentiation between countries. Each country should have same features and engines. It's what the consumer wants yet companies don't listen.

Also yes I don't own the diesel but it's still a good engine. They should be allowed to have it

You feel for your fellow Mazda enthusiasts!

A lot of that is a government regulations issue. Car manufacturers would LOVE to have far more unified standards and be able to reduce their R&D and manufacturing complexities.

What year did you own? I know late 90's/early 2000's they had some definite reliability issues, particularly as they moved a lot of North American manufacturing to Mexico and it took them a while to *ahem* work out their QC issues.

In the last 10'ish years though, they've moved a lot closer to Mazda in their reliability rankings. Both now fall in that sort of mid-tier 'pretty good but a step down from the best' in reliability with Mazda still holding a narrow lead.

I get that but come on - if other countries can do it, why can't all (uhm)

Uniformity in legislation and regulation should occur.

Alright alright but those were actually pretty cool (as Volvos go anyway) and met your most of your requirements although I think they were fairly thirsty for premium fuel also..

I quite like Volvo's actually. Particularly their 'R' models. They don't make stick shift cars anymore though, so they're on my list (pissed)

certified 328d wagon? No stick up there either though I guess? Edit: Eh I actually didn't like the 328d sedan I drove at all nevermind- slow and agricultural not a good example of a modern diesel imo...but the GLK250 was- great motor didn't love the vehicle as a whole but what an awesome engine.

At this point I'd even be happy without a diesel and: bigger than the 3, decent power to weight and a manual. There's not much to choose from in this part of the world (pissed)

Civic hatch if you can get beyond the looks, I'd probably have the Si if it came in a hatch but Si sedan may be worth a look if the hatch isn't a must, it is roomier than the 3...
Certified X1s are going pretty cheap seeing nice 14/15s in l the low 20s usd with around 30k on them..no manual but 8 speed with paddles is pretty damn good

Not a fan of their engineering these days either. Their new 1.6T is not looking great and they consistently under brake their cars. Add it's dashing good looks and it's a big 'no thanks' for me. I drove Honda's for years but they jumped the shark IMO.

I've come to the firm decision that I will drive a G.D. manual until they pry them from my cold dead hands.

Vive la manual transmission!!!!

Could have 14 speeds and paddles, it's not the same as a manual. It's not as engaging or connected. Full stop. I refuse to be an auto driving sheep on my phone (rockon)(poke)...lol

Also used car prices here in Canada don't seem to offer anywhere near the same deals on prices. Factor in much higher interest rates for used cars and the payments are damn near the same for a 3 year old car with less warranty and 'who knows how it's been driven/maintained' miles on it.

^ Hey man I fully get it- when I traded my 128 for the X1 it was the first time I've been manual-less since I started driving..but its coming down to performance or budget focused options and even within that set the choices are pretty slim. This thing is intriguing..wrong wheel drive(no torque steer at least) but like the funkyness and newfound dose of sport- kid is a pretty good reviewer too.

PS- I think 6 or 7 gears is plenty!
PPS- I'm all about manuals and increased driver engagement that is being stolen away but..having a manual doesn't make a car fun(looking at you Subaru Impreza) that I really wanted to like..and it is much improved but the rev hang almost made me puke in my mouth..hated it almost as much as a CVT- not really but it was super annoying.

The 2.2d is really quite good, 6 speed auto works well with the torque. I see this years verson has released turbos for more torque and hp. Torque is almost double that of the 2.5 NA. Extra gearing not really required.

Have they been released in the USA yet ?
