urethane lip down

Geez....I'm walking out to my P5 today, looking at the sweet new lip/grill combo that I've barely had on for a month now...and notice something wrong. On one of the sides, the paint is off about the size of your palm. There are some scratch marks, but no impact. I would have known if I hit something of substance. I've been driving so carefully because it's so low, and of all places it gets hit on the side. I'm so pissed. I can flake the paint off now that there is a break in the paint....Guess I'll be back at the body shop next week...I wonder if they painted it too thin?

I hate to say it..but it sounds like it was improperly prepped for the type of material it is...Make sure they follow urethane prep procedures next time.

Matt

I'm no pro on paint, but don't they add a 'flex' in the paint so this type of thing doesn't happened? Sorry to read about this bro.

How does your lip fit? Mine doesn't wrap around the passenger fender right and has gaps in the front between the fog and lower grill.

i agree flaking means the paint didnt adhear to urethane. they proly forgot to add an ahesion promotor.

yes it's flaking, but it looks like something scraped or hit the side...although I don't see any point of impact, just some scratches into the urethane, but what really ticks me off is now that there is a break in the paint I can just flake more and more off...

take it back and tell em that they did a bad job and to respray it. either way it was eventually going to start peeling.

He told me they added flex...it even says so on the invoice. I dunno how that works though.

I have gaps too...more noticeable then I thought I would have too...right under the foglights is the worst..

The paint is not peeling because of flex, it's straight up sh*!!y prep work. And if it was hit it would just scratch the hell out of the paint, not make it peel off. If it's a good body shop they will repaint it, and not make up excuses! IMO

I took it by yesterday afternoon...he said he would repair/repaint it for $72....I think it should be free...I think I might get a few other opinions from other shops and see what they say...I'll take some digi pics in the morning and see what you guys think...

Here are a few pics that I took....bad paint work or just bad luck?

It looks like you scraped something, but the paint shouldn't be flaking off like that. I'd bring it back to the body shop and have them take a look. :)

im having trouble with my paint sticking as well. the shop is supposed to be a good one but when i put the double sided tape on the paint just peels right off

I just got my lip painted and I had to go to a few places before I finally got it done. Like some others on this thread have already said, it's all in the prep work. Before they are even supposed to start, that lip was to be cleaned well and put out to dry a few times so that the impurities are gone. Then of course the flex agent has to be added, but then "baking" the lip was what some of the more high end shops recommended. Not all shops do that. That's just my 2 cents.

eh just some wax and grease remover should do the trick. id tell em to sand it with some 1500 or scuff it up with a scotch brite. baking it will only cure the paint. if it cracks its because there are contaminants on the urethane. did you apply any wax? if they used dupont paint, dupont recommeds a 60 day wait for waxing. also if they are using urethane based paint, i beleive spies&hecker, you dont really need flex additive.
