Upgraded clutch and flywheel

I am in the market for the same as well. Probably going to get the Exedy replacement clutch kit- down to $100 now, but I will be going with an aftermarket flywheel. Mine is suffering from what that TSB refers to as an uneven metallurgy problem with the factory flywheel - uneven heating across and through surface - can't be resurfaced - only replaced. Mine was crap since new and now at 45k clutch is on it's last legs. So I don't trust OE replacement or can't afford to. Is the MSP flywheel the cheapest, quality unit, closest to factory P5 weight? Don't want to add to the jerkiness with a significantly lighter flywheel.

First, what are you doing to your car that you will need a heavier duty clutch? If you are turboing, then you will need one. If not, stick with the Exedy replacement clutch.

Second, do not get the MS lightened flywheel. It is only about 2lbs lighter than stock so you would be wasting your money. If you really want to spend the money on a flywheel, get the Fidanza. I have one, and there is no performance loss, your engine will not fall apart, and whatever anyone has told you about it that doesn't have one is most likely not true.

Third, I believe there was a TSB issued on the P5 clutch for chattering. I don't know what the issue is, but at least take your car to your mechanic and ask him to drive it and get his opinion.
did you have a mechanic put ur flywheel in or did you do it yourself? my mechanic wants $200 to put it in. legit or is he screwin me?

I also have cold clutch chatter, its annoying. $200 seems ok for the work involved, but I am just guessing here...after reviewing this http://www.musclecarblog.com/story-91-2_howto_install_a_fidanza_clutch_and_flywheel
200 seems really good. I wouldnt do this without someone that has done it before.

The fidanza weighs 7lbs, what does the stock weigh?

Would it be wise to replace the clutch while you r at it? I mean are there any issues when replacing a flywheel to a 45k mile clutch?

I have a ZOOM brand stage II clutch from my local auto parts store, its a4-puck configuration clutch setup. I also put a lightweight flywheel in at the same time. It makes a huge difference. Do them both at the same time if you can.

$200 is rip-off. It takes no more than an hour, if that to replace the flywheel if you have a lift. Its mainly just know-how...and even know-how doesn't get paid that well.

Half of you people don't even know what your talking about. Lighter clutch??? Sure...how about a lighter engine and frame while we are at it.

Secondly that post is a RWD V8 car. There will be no disconnecting of the driveshaft and no need to move the exhaust.

chill out mr. 77 posts. pay ur dues and then start runnin ur mouth

Being new to a forum...doesn't make you knew to performance and engine know-how. What I can't quite understand is why people on here upgrade their turbo system before they even touch the engine. Its really beyond me.

i'm not sayin nothin bout performance. i'm just sayin you need to show some freakin respect and take it down a noch. you got good stuff to say, just watch how you say it

What does that have to do with this thread, belongs in the rant section.
If it is so easy then explain it. Most of us dont have a lift. A how to would be a start to helping us that "dont know what we are talking about".
And it's only a rip if you know what u r doing, if I was a mechanic I would like to get paid for what I do and make a decent living.

No one said lighter clutch. Read. Lighter flywheel, that is proven performance, not measurable on a dyno.

you only need to visit that dude's myspace page for about 5 seconds to see what kind of person is doling out this wonderful advice....

werd...a 7.5 lb flywheel going to give dramatic results in 1st and 2 gear revs.

I had to replace my clutch and flywheel due to clutch chatter. My mechanic also tole me my clutch was fine but I replaced it with the exedy oem and had the flywheel machined.

When I spoke with my stealership's service manager, he stated that this was a common problem and that it was due to the combination of materials in the clutch and the stock flywheel. He recommended I get the flywheel inspected and machined and instead, replace the clutch...

So, that is exactly what I did. Had the flywheel inspected, machined and an oem exedy put in. No problems since. I too wanted to go with a lighter flywheel but they are more expensive than a clutch and affect everyday drive-ability with the crappy 2002 P5 5sp tranny. Especially with 3rd gear changes.

I was able to get my exedy oem clutch for $185.00 CDN and the flywheel machined for $60.00 CDN.

i have been in the market for a lightened flywheel for a little bit and i cant decide what to do. I have heard some people say that a lightened flywheel is great and others say it was the biggest waste of money ever. Im not sure whether its worth changing...I mean if putting in a 7.5 lb fidanza makes low gear driving too annoying then theres always the option of going lighter than stock but not 7.5lbs light. what do you guys think?
