Unsold 2008 Speed3, what's a fair price?

The sales manager at the dealership with the unsold 08 MS3s just e-mailed me late tonight to say that Mazda just announced an additional $1000 rebate on all 08 Speed3s.

Is this just a BS sales tactic he's pitching, or is it true...Mazda might be nervous about the 2010s already showing up on lots when there's 08s still there.

Only if they are dudes that look like smoking hot women with a well done sex change... Because honestly... I wouldn't ever want to know. It reminds me of Thailand too much....
(blarf)

haha, my brother is in japan. and he thought his sergeants wifes friend was fine as s***. but come to find out it was a japanese guy that had a sex change.

he kept asking the wife to hook him up and and she kept telling him that he didnt want to. he insisted so she finally told him it was a guy that had a sex change.

he was like "zack, i swear this was the finest guy i have ever seen in my life" haha

It really is amazing sometimes... You wouldn't know without someone telling you in a lot of cases...

This one is easy to determine... Since they are now offering a rebate (according to him) ask him what the new price is. You should be able to negotiate a price, and then clearly see the 1000 rebate as a separate line. I know this for a fact because I just got my g/f a new Hyundai and there was a $1500 rebate... You can see it plain as day on the pricing sheet.

So all these "rebates" are basically just X dollars off the sticker, correct? It's equivalent to a bigger cash downpayment?

Weird thing is that now on MazdaUSA.com it shows a $2500 customer cash for 08 MS3...

Wow, thanks for the heads up, I found that too. Damn, that'll be tough to pass up....

Just talked to the dealership manager. He confirmed that it's now $2500 cash instead of $1500. The extra $1000 is only until 3/31. New fiscal year is 4/1, hence the quick drop.

Visiting them tonight. I think they're getting desperate to offload these.

They want $21799 - $1000 rebate = $20799 for a brand new 08 GT.

I figure I can talk them down to $20k. Sound good? Seems like a great deal on a brand new car. I need to be careful to get a very solid offer on my trade before getting into MS3 price...easy for them to lowball the trade and **** you over.

If they won't come down to $20k, maybe I can get them to give me some free accessories? i.e. floormats, nose mask, wheel locks, or whatever else.

Yeah that sounds like a good deal.

As for accessories, get them to pay for a clear bra.

Sounds great to me, but you might have to settle for like $20,500 or something. That's still about $3500 cheaper than the old MSRP. Look into their fees and what have you, too, see what else they want on top of the car. Like, is that $20,799 before or after freight and PDI? Do they have a stupid $400 paperwork fee, or some crap like that? How else are they going to try and suck money out of you? What's the OTD price going to be after tax and all other applicable fees?

You may not have the option to shop elsewhere for this car which sort of limits your options, but don't be afraid to step away from the deal to think. You might even talk to other Mazda dealers in the area about the car you want if you think they can get stock from the dealer you are currently negotiating with, and see if they can give you a better overall deal.

Incidentally, get your price first then negotiate trade. If they cut you a good deal on trade they'll be less willing to move on the price of the car, or drop dealers fees, or throw in extras. If they won't give you fair trade on the car when they are so close to closing the deal I'd just do the whole "I can't sell my car for what you're offering, sorry" angle and walk. It's a buyers market right now, and they'll try and find a way to make you happy if you look like a serious buyer (which you must, at this point). Fair on your trade at a dealership is going to be KBB less about 15% - 20%, though. If they'll give you around that, I'd be happy with it.

I see what dealerships are selling my exact trade for, and I know a typical profit margin is maybe $1200-$1800. What's ironic is that the Honda dealer across the street only has a single S2000, and it's the goofy CR model that isn't as popular. That's going to work to my advantage.

I plan to stop at Carmax first and see what they'll appraise it at. At least then I can say, "well I can just sell it to Carmax for X and bring the money here."

I will likely play the waiting game. They have 3 unsold ones, and there are two other local dealerships in the same situation.

And if they're stupid about it, I'll just go buy the used 2008 with 15k for a few thousand less and be done with it. Again you can say, "well why don't I just go buy this used one and use the price difference to get a better warranty?"

Sounds like you don't even need the advice of the internet, you got all your ducks in a row ;)

Hope you can get good numbers from these guys, though. Leverage the dealers on each other, too. Get em to over your business if you can.

Good luck!

The dealer has about 6 or 7 unsold brand new 08 Speed3s. They still have unsold 2009s, and there's a few 2010 (non-Speed) 3s there now.

Website shows a price of 20999 for the sport, 22999 for the GT.
If they have that many left over, I think it's worth a shot. If you could get out of there with one for 20K I think you'd be doing pretty good.

My local dealer has 5 08's on the lot when I went looking on February. i ended up buying an 08 True Red MS3 sport. The sticker on the car with thier "protection package" and pin striping was $24800. I picked the car up for $20,332 OTD.

bought one yesterday with the 2500 rebate, it's real but over today!! I ended up 21,200 for a white GT with some addons. beautiful car.

I took a pass. Their trade-in offer was okay (not great), but I just didn't like the sales guy.

It ultimately came down to my cost. I simply can't swing a new one at this point. I'll keep looking for a used 07 GT.

Thought your username looked familiar...
A car to me is more of a weekend toy.
... and now...
Selling the S2000. Actually probably trading it in. Such a blast to drive and a total-chick magnet, but it has absolutely zero utility.
Flipping two cars that quick to only start back at square one... maybe you need to sit back and think about the decision that makes the most logical sense, not just what tickles your pickle.

So let me see if I understand this. You sold your MS3, bought an S2000 and are are looking to go back to an MS3 all within a timespan of about 7-8 months? Does that about sum up the insanity?
