Unsold 2008 Speed3, what's a fair price?

Something to ask is if the car is considered a used car already. Here in Canada, any 08 Mazda's (that are still considered new, ie: 15 miles on the odo) that a dealer still has and is trying to sell are now used cars.. That means the warranty has already started on them too but it means there is no freight/PDI charge.

You should be able to get that car for a pretty good price.... just be willing to walk away and they'll call you back.
that may be a canadian law.. I don't remember that happening here when I was workin for a ford dealer..

as the old adage goes...you don't know until you try

OR you won't get the deal unless you ask for it - they're not going to volunteer a low price, it's up to you to ask for and wait for the response. worst thing that happens is they say 'no' and you tell them to keep you in mind.

if they still can't sell it in a few weeks, you'll be getting jingled & jangled. time is on your side, not theirs. every day the car sits in the lot the stealership has to pay more interest to their lender...

all you have to do is take on a slightly larger loan (with down payment etc) than they have on it currently, and they'll likely give it up, otherwise, as you said, its costing them money.

Here in the States, a car is new if it's never been titled. Doesn't matter how old it is.

We got our leftover '08 TR Speed3 GT that stickered for 26,100 for 23 OTD. This was in October, when '08.5s were plentiful and '09s were even more plentiful.

Walk in with the $18,000 in cash...put it on the table and tell them what you want...it worked for me when I bought my car...I got it for $4,500 less than it was listed for on the lot...listed at $13,000 got for $8,500...also got new tires/fluids/tank of gas...pieces missing like floormats/cargo cover/roof rack caps...

Some people are desperate...lol...

To the OP, I got my 2009 Speed 3 Gt at 1,000 below invoice of 24,064. But, as I was leaving the dealer informed of 2,000 off Invoice on any 2008 models.

To the OP: I would probably call the dealership & ask for a salesman to call you about buying an MS3. (This way, they get your phone number, which is important later.) Make an appointment to test drive it with him. Show up, test drive, offer the $18k you want to pay. Negotiate for a good while, to make them know you are serious. If they say no, thank them politely and walk away.

They have your number, and know you are interested. The closer they get to having the '10 Speed models on the lot, the more desperate they will get to unload 2-year old leftovers. They will likely call you with a seriously bottom-dollar offer within a few weeks. Maybe not the $18k you are aiming for, but probably the best deal you're going to get. (Just don't go in after they call you back & start trying to add extended warranties, tire service, maintenance plans, etc., because they may rescind the offer if you do)

If you don't want to call ahead, just make sure that you get far enough into the test drive & negotiation process that you have filled out a form with your phone info on it. I've done that a few times before & it worked like a charm, especially at the end of a model year.

Man I am sure glad that the KBB listing for a car is what people actually pay for cars.

Something is only worth as much as someone will pay for it.

absolutely.

i dont see you getting out of the door with that speed for no less that 22-23 and thats pushing it. these cars hold their value and are getting more and more popular everyday.

in my little area(sanford/lake mary, its a suburb of orlando), with in the last few months there has to be about 10 new Speed owners.

i got a sweet deal on my 09 ms3 sport. i got it out of the door for 22k

Wow.... I am more amazed by your 22K OTD deal than anything I have read so far on this post. Let me get this straight... Orlando sales tax is 6.5%, so after we subtract the destination charge, tax and title, you have:

22K - $595 (estimated destination charge) / 1.065 = $20,098. So you got a Sport (I am assuming with the three typical options of Floor mats, Wheel locks, and auto dimming mirror) that has an invoice of $22,278 for almost $2000 less than invoice? Wow... your dealer must have been out of his / her mind. Almost too good to be true....

sounds like a used car....that won't work on new cars and dealers actually prefer financing...they make more money that way than cash.

That's not that crazy. It's better to take a $1,000 or $2,000 hit on the sale knowing they'll make it back in warranty work and the service department than it is to have a $22,000 red mark on their books from inventory they've purchased but can't move.

that's just it... they will move the speeds... if they don't, they will move them around to other dealers until they do... i seriously doubt you would get one for 18k cash...

I guess I am assuming with the popularity and relatively rarity of speeds versus other Mazda's, that dealers wouldn't have then lying around en masse. I can tell you when I got two speeds within about 5 months of each other, it was very difficult to find them in the DC/VA/PA area. It could have been because they had only come out 6 months before...but still. I suppose this dealer could have been the exception and just happened to have several 2009 speeds they just could sell or move to another dealer. Considering only licensed Mazdaspeed dealerships can even sell them, it just seems strange.

haha im looking at the same dealership i think they have so many unsold speed 3's next week im goin over there and offerin them 20k in cash for a 08 sport and will see what happens, but then they also have a 08 sport with 1500 miles on it is that still considered new? because there sellin it as new its prob the demo car or somthing

Why offer 20K on an 2008? 240Ka got a 2009 for about 20K. Offer less... It would seem they took a deal like that before, why not again? Especially on a 2008. If they were hard pressed to get rid of an 2009 (Apparently they were...), they must be absolutely dying to get rid of an 2008.

They will move them? Prove it. Cars aren't sold until they are... well, sold. Auto sales have dropped dramatically in the last several months, but it's not uniform across America. Some areas are still selling, some aren't.

Dealerships are pretty good at keeping in mind the bottom line. If they sell a car, chances are they are still making a buck off it, by incentives from Mazda or projected service history or even how they managed to get the vehicle on their lot.

I'm not saying 18k is a reasonable expectation, either, mind you. I just don't think it's right to say that a dealership is getting hosed on a deal when we only know the OTD price half of the equation. Or that it's safe to say a "car will move" given what's going on in the economy right now.
