"Unlocking" a GSM mobile phone (Nokia 8290)

Does anyone know about how to unlock the Nokia 8290 with the cable and some sort of program? To be exact, I should ask, do you guys know which program I can use? Not sure where to find this stuff on the net because they all cater to European/Asian phones, and not the North American ones. Goddamn stores rip you off so much to unlock a phone, $40-80 CDN!

What exactly do you mean?

I am a tech support rep for a wireless carrier.

Our company carried the Nokia 8390 (GSM). Different model but they still are part of the 8000 series so it shouldn't be that different.

Let me know what you are trying to do or unlock and I'll see what I can come up with.

Have you ever seen those cables that plug into the back of the phone that let you upload songs/graphics and also mess around with the firmware of the phone through your computer? Well, I've seen many computer programs that allow you to remove the service provider lock on the phone, but I've only seen ones for the Nokia 8210, 8310, etc. etc. in other words, only the Asian/European models. So, do I just use the 8210 unlocking program to unlock my 8290 (considering they're pretty much the same, except the 8210 is GSM 1800)

Shame on you, hakushi! You should have done a search before you posted! There must be twenty threads regarding unlocking Nokia 8290's! :D

i would pay the $40-$80 to have the store unlock the phone...either way, i think a software is required to unlock the phone anyways

Yeah, actually, I've seen the software on the 'net before. I got one for my friend's 5190 and it worked great, but i can't find one for my phone, and i can't find any north american mobile phone messageboards either! Oh well, forget it :)

Do a search out on the net for some unlocking codes for your specific model of phone. I too am a AT&T Wireless..uhh...user.;)

I found this

This and other GSM phones use smart cards (aka SIMs). It's located next to the battery and is about 1 x in size. If you have a PC/SC compliant smart card programmer, you can download the smart card SDK from http://www.microsoft.com/smartcard and start hacking around. What you decide to accomplish with your hacking is up to your imagination. My limited hacking seems to have revealed that all the 8290 code is built with Java. (Tip - it would seem wise to first dump the SIM to the SIM emulator and then hack with that image as opposed to messing with the SIM directly from your phone - not that I tried doing this myself).
You can download the Nokia SDK's from http://forum.nokia.com/main.html . This is an alternate (and easier) way of communicating with your phone and exploring its treasures.

Hope this helps. I got the info from here:
http://www.robertsoft.com/8290.htm

*3001#12345# for non GSM phones.

on gsm phone, replace the 12345 with the lock code for your sim card. Then usually you can just change the soc and sid.

otherwise, what I do, is get a copy of Wintesla, that is nokias tech software. get a data cable for your phone (about $5.00 on the net). then you can just copy a friends phone from the company you want to go to, and overwrite that info into your phone.
