Unlock trip computer on non GT MS3

I was just looking through the service bulletin regarding the known audio issues with the 2008 radio, and they give a listing of the parts required for replacement by the dealer.

I'm not gonna list them all, but the main thing I noticed is that they have single unit and changers with MP3 capability, some models with trip computer and some without. It seems to be in the different software packages installed. Mine has software version 1.00D3Cu, while the trip computer models have software version 1.00M3Cu. So it looks like they've eliminated the trip computer capability entirely with the units installed on the 2008's, which is why the hack can't enable it.

I've gotta take my car in for the audio fix, and while I'm there, I'm gonna see if my dealer will replace it with one of the changers that has the trip computer software installed, maybe for a few extra bucks.

I really never post on this site but wanted to let eveyone know that the trip computer trick worked for me. I have the 8.5 ms3 metro grey base model "sport". I also did have the radio replaced due to the same problems talked about on this board but anyway it worked.(headbang)

I followed the original plan and held down the :00 button for 5 secs then POW the clock is gone and the fuel section came up.

I use the :00 button to toggle thru the menu on fuel usage ghm and total miles left hit the clock to bring clock back or hit and hold the :00 to remove the clock and bring on the mpg formate again.

I might be due to the radio replacment but I have no clue.

Good luck to everyone and hope it helps.

Oh wow, I never even thought to try this trick again after I had my HU replaced by the dealer. I'd love to go try it now, but the dealer has my car right now tryin to fix stuff. I'll let you all know after I get it back.

When I talked to my service guy about ordering the replacement radio, he said that I wouldn't be able to exchange it for the part numbered one that has the trip computer software, it has to be a straight swap since it's a warranty thing.

But who knows, maybe the software they're loading into the fixed ones is the version that allows you to access the trip computer. Here's hoping.

Well I never tried it with the other radio becasue after reading these threads I thought it didnt work. I happened to be in the car today with my laptop gave it a try since the dealer replacement and bingo.

What I get is Miles left to empty, avg gpm and instant gpm. I use the :00 button to scowl thru the readings. The last one really shows you how much gas you eat when you get on the little monster.

damn man, I was about to go outside and try this, but I have an 08 and they say it don't work. Thats completely stupid that they changed that one little thing to make this not work.

I purchased a touch screen dvd deck and was hoping to do this before swapping the deck so that it would stay on before I swap out to the new deck. Thats lame. Maybe I'll try to find a local with the right deck and see if I can turn the DIS ON before I swap to my new deck and see if it stays on

Well read two threads up because my car is an 8.5 and they said it would not work either.

ah really? I was trying this on my lunch break just to make 100% sure and it wasn't working. I look at an angle at my screen and I can see there are the digital things for it, so they can probably light up on this screen, but yeah it has the stupid :00 button instead of the SET button, and it's the single disc version so it might not work. I'll try it again tho

A week ago i noticed some fuel consumption graphics on the LCD display. Oddly i couldn't figure out how to turn them on. Then today i discovered this thread. I have a 2005 JDM sedan. Seems strange that the display would have all the graphics for displaying fuel consuption, but not have any means of activation.

:(

Any thoughts? My Bbuttons are [clock][set][FM][AM][CD][Tape/MD]
and i've tried every combo i can think of.

Please forgive the cross posting of this message. This subject has been mentioned on all 6 of the forums on which I lurk.

I purchased a 2008 MS3 Sport with a single CD player. I was unable to do the 2 button trick to get DIS ON as others have reported. I got on eBay and purchased what was advertised as a '04-'06 single CD Mazda 3 radio from Discount OEM Radios. I knew from the forums that '04-'05 was not going to work. The picture looked like my radio except black faced instead of the metallic color. I risked the purchase because it was only $19.99 plus $16.00 shipping. I received the radio and noted it had a December '05 build date, making it from an '06 model. It was also a 6 CD changer instead of a single CD as advertised and marked on the paperwork. The faceplate was badly scratched as was the display. I removed the damaged faceplate and display, literally a 4 minute job. I removed the original radio from my 2008 MS3 and swapped in the eBay 2006 radio, re-using the 2008 display and faceplate. I powered it up, did the 2 button trick, DIS ON, power down, power up, push :00 (no "SET" button) and now I have a 6 CD changer with the trip computer in my 2008 non-GT MS3 for a $36 investment. This radio seems to have more power than the single CD and the changer works well. So, from this comes another datapoint, the computer that provides the trip computer function resides in the radio and 2006-2008 faceplates and displays are interchangeable. I hope this helps someone else.

This is exactly what i did about 2 month ago for my '08 Sport. I got an 06-07 cd player off ebay for close to nothing, because it was missing a button. Switching the front panel is a matter of unscrewing 4 small screws, and I also kept my display. the only difference is that i got a single CD. My ipod is plugged in all the time, and i rarely use the CD player anyway, I only did this for the trip computer.

Its bulls*** it doesn't work on the 08 sport.

Hey if anyone is LOCAL to me and has one, I'd like to simply plug it in to unlock the trip computer and then you can have the deck back :) I just got an after market cd player for it and was about to put it in and just wanted to unlock this before I put the other one in.

I don't think it will work like that. The trip computer is in the deck itself, so if you take it out, there will go your trip computer.

some people tho have swapped to aftermarket decks and it will stay on, but that you cannot change which display it uses so you have to keep it at the one you like/use the most. I had this feature on my 350Z and really enjoyed watching the "miles til empty" and "current mpg" feature, it was pretty cool! I think all cars should have it. One thing that also had was a trip counter with miles driven and time driven so you could track how long it took say to go to and from work that day.

Another cool feature was an adjustable shift light feature that could be adjusted by 100RPM so you could adjust when a red light would light up on the tach to tell you to shift.

Anyways... AHHH I want it on my speed3!

Well, I tried it on my replacement radio in my 08.5 sport and still no dice. Make me wonder though. Rumblefish, have you actually played an MP3 cd in yours since you had the replacement? Wonder if you still have that capability.

Yes I do play the ipod and sorry to hear it didnt work for you. Make sure you follow the directions from the firts page and try it a few times. Dont forget to hold down the 00: button for like 5 seconds or even more--good luck.

No no, not referring to an ipod, the 08.5 decks should be capable of reading an mp3 cd. I have a feeling you don't have that capability since you were able to unlock the trip computer. Take some mp3's and burn them to a "data" cd, not an "audio" cd and give it a try.

Hmm... This is interesting. CWPspeed3 just got his headunit replaced and is going to try this in a minute, he has an 08.5. I have an 08 and it does not work but have had audio issues as well and have a new head unit on its way. Hopefully that will let me unlock this as well.
mordant80, are you thinking that once you activate the brain to play an MP3 CD the trip wont work any more?

No, I was just thinking that the ones with mp3 capability are the ones that they took the ability to enable the trip computer out. The single disc mp3 players anyhow.

yea, they're bose.. I know that the 6 disc mp3 players can be enabled, but I'm thinking it's probly just the single disc mp3 non-bose players that can't. You said you have an 08 that won't enable right? Just curious, have you ever attempted to play an mp3 cd in it?
