Unlock trip computer on non GT MS3

Thanks,

This might be most usefull info to date for us Sport '08 owners. (drinks)(drinks)

Anyone with a confirmation before I start dsiconfiguring that perfectly stock MS3 single CD? (Not that I would know how - can you post some tips or pics?)

Removing the radio is simple.
-Open the glove box
-Pop off the trim strip that goes across the display starting in the middle where the gap is (it has a hook on the far right end that must be slid left to unhook).
-Remove the 2 screws at the top of the radio that are exposed when the trim is removed.
-The radio is now retained by a clip on each lower corner and supported by a rubber mount at the rear.
-Work the radio straight out until the two clips are loose. You may need to loosen the panel above the display to slip the display from under it.
-Have shop rags ready to place under the radio as you pull it out or you will scratch the panel below the radio.
-The toughest part is next, removing the connectors.
-The antenna connector slides out without much difficulty
-The display connector has a tab on to that must be depressed to release.
-The two remaining connectors have to be disengaged by depressing a tab on the underside of the connectors toward the top of the radio. What makes this difficult is the shortness of the harnesses so that you cannot get the radio very far from the Instrument panel.
-The radio is now out and installation is the reverse, except the connectors snap in easily. Watch not to pinch a harness during installation.

I estimate removal at 20 minutes tops and re-install at 10 minutes. The display and faceplate can be swapped in 5 minutes.

Sounds like Mazda realized Sport owners were unlocking the trip computer so they had (whoever makes the unit) disable it for the 08's. Pretty lame on Mazda's part if you ask me but whatever. Nice to see there's at least a way around that... sucks you have to take the dash apart but it sounds like a relatively easy job. Not sure I'd do it though... I can't stand dash rattles and, knowing my luck, I'd tighten a screw too much (doesn't take much to disturb the delicate balance that is dash nvh) or even worse, scratch my brand new car's dash.

I guess if having a trip computer is important enough to you and you're confident neither of those things will happen, it's worth a shot.

It was interesting the 2006 radio was made in China and the 2008 radio was made in Malaysia. Also it was good to find out the head unit is the unique component and the faceplates and displays are universal except for color and button names (SET vs. :00).

another trip meter for an '08 MS3

thanks enganear, your tips for removal/installation were flawless. i did the whole job in about ten minutes, literally. i got my radio replacement from ebay as well, discount oem radios i believe, i had to pay a little more, as someone else bid on it, but i got it,(single cd, too bad!)took mine out, (very easy by the way...) swapped faceplates, and powered her up. one thing i noticed though, i had to power it up, shut it down, then power it up again holding the buttons, almost like it needed juice one time in order to take a command. the first time i powered it up holding the buttons, no love. but i shut her down, tried it again, and there it was. sweet! that was the one thing i really wanted, now i have it....

thanks again,

davey

if you go up a few posts, to mine, the older radio was an easy fix. i spent a little over $30 something dollars, 15 minutes of my time, and now i have it on my '08 single disc ms3, not too bad if you really want it, like i did............

yeah i dont think this works on my 08 MS3, if anyone got this to work plz tell me how

You really should read the rest of this thread. This will not work on 08 MS3s because the computer is in the radio and Mazda changed the radio on non-GT 08 MS3s. Your best option is to backdate the radio to an 06/07. Get a changer while you are at it.
