Under Idling Bad

heyy im having the same exact probelm but im throwing a code so im getting it scanned soon and ill post up what it is... my car idle's rly low and will maybe once a day stall

see what the code is....i have a cel right now for the egr....i think when i put it all together i didn't get the egr tube tight so when the valve opens, there is an open vac and then it almost stalls out but picks back up. it acts the same way it did before i cleaned the valve.

edit: year and model of your car....my code is p0106....if you go somewhere there code info might not be correct

What is the EGR valve exactly?

at's a valve that opens to let dirty exhaust air into the intake as you slow down or open and closes at idle. I can see the tube on the drivers side of your picture in your sig. That goes all the way into the intake manifold just under the throtle body. It collects carbon and will stick closed, when it sticks it can be one of the causes to a poor idle. I use seafoam through the intake often to help keep it clean and to prevent this from happening to my MSP.

i've asked this before but maybe you know: removing the egr and blocking it off, does it help performance, hinder, or does nothing??

Yes it will help if your building a car with a stand alone EMS. But since most arent the ECU is based around the EGR so leave it alone. It will cause you to have a CEL if you block it off. I have mine left open at the exhaust manifold end and it's fine other than I have a CEL for it.

if you block it off and leave the solenoid attched but pulled off the other crap and plug the intake and header will it still throw a code?? kinda lke removing the vtcs and stll leaving the sensor hooked up and just pulling the vac hoses and pluggin the hole..

Yes you will still get a code, it's kind of sensitive. There is a sensor that notices backpresure and boost I assume. On the VTCS there are no sensors jiust flaps. The EGR is for emissions and it is more regulated by the ECU. What are you having issues with?

i'm about to get at it tomorrow but i did the vtcs removal and intake port last week. since i got it back together i have a cel. if i reset, only after driving for awhile it will come on again once the car hits idle rpm where it will occasionaly dip. it will only do the rpm drop every so often not constant. the code is p0106 which has to do with the egr...i'm thinking that maybe i didn't get the tube on tight enough or something.....any input?

Might have a leak, did you use a gasket or so gasket maker? It's kind of hard to find, it opens up under deceleraion with a load on it so you have to do a lot to find it. Try retorquing it or at the very least look it over completely again.

i used the orig metal one that it had, it was clean and undamaged so i jsut wided it all down and put it back on....i'll find out more tomrrow...YAY i can't wait....

for some reason i think it's the tube more than the valve...i don't thinki got it tight enough

This is funny. I got on the board tonight to ask the same question about my 03.5 MSP. It has had the same stumble in the idle and it seems to be getting worse. Seems like the car wants to die. Mine only has 23,500 miles on it. So I figure maybe the EGR is getting dirty from just putting around in it. I figure probably time for a tune up too.

^Ditto. It started the day before Thanksgving. It's annoying a hell... I've got 63000 miles on mine.

sub, mine is like this. It would refuse to die, but this morning it died on me after I boosted the heck out of it and went to nutral. Hopefully that won't continue. But I'd like to know how to stop it from dropping so much...mine only happens after boost. If I stay out of boost the car idles 100% perfect. (I'm dual bov w/stock bpv setup)

Eh, guess everyone's getting that issue...

I got Hardpipes, upgraded smic, hks bov recirculated from the cold pipe to sri, SS AFC. No leaks after testing with brake cleaner all over, idle stayed normal. 53k miles on my 03.5

So I'm going with 2 other options:
1- Cleaning the MAF (What product should I use for that?)
2- Cleaning the EGR

My wideband always goes to 10-12:1 when I let go the gas but doesn't always want to stall when dropping back to idle level.

Sorry for the necropost, but I had Mazda look at it. I actually went back in the garage with the mechanic to see if we could recreate it since it was intermittent. He hooked up his laptop and started messing with the EGR valve and it began idling funky like crazy. On my car, it's most definitely the EGR valve.

Hadn't had the EGR mess with me since it had around 30k miles. Thanks to Wes for that Spool turbo manifold.
