Here's my "clean" version of the letter:
My roommate and I entered the "Absecon Do it best" hardware store on 3/5/2007 during our lunch break. Note that we were coming from white collar jobs, and we were dressed in a clean cut fashion. There were no customers in the store when we arrived. I immediately approached the register with a computer printout of a specific part that I needed. The cashier was helpful, and walked us to the section where I could find what I was looking for, which was in the last aisle in the store. I started looking around trying to find the specific part size that I was looking for, and he stood by my side watching me. "Thanks, I'll take it from here", I said politely. He asked me if there was anything else that he could assist me with, and I told him that I'd be fine. He then walked to the end of that aisle (about 50' away) and stood there facing the front of the store.
My roommate and I went about our business looking for the correct size of the part we needed. Eventually my roommate got bored and wandered into the next aisle (the 2nd aisle from the back of the store). Suddenly, the cashier at the end of the store was missing from my aisle. My roommate returned to my aisle a moment later, as did the cashier. Interesting. Soon after, while roommate stayed in the last aisle, I went to the 2nd aisle from the rear. Within seconds, the cashier was in the same aisle as me. I found this odd, but shrugged it off. Moments later, another employee took the place of the cashier (I assume the cashier went elsewhere). Whenever he appeared at the end of the aisle, he would look directly at us, watching our every move. It made us feel very uncomfortable. For the next ten minutes or so, we moved between the rear aisle, and the 3rd aisle in from the rear, looking at a few items, but I was mostly focusing on finding the a certain part in the rear aisle. Every time one of us moved, the employee would appear at the end of the aisle within seconds, and just stared us down. On two occasions I heard him say something into his walkie talkie about "changing the angle on camera 4". Apparently, watching our every move was not enough, he wanted the cameras fixed on us.
This was getting out of hand. Why were we being watched? We're both FAR from suspicious looking, and we weren't doing anything odd. I was simply looking at parts on a wall. The both of us were in the 2nd aisle, and I told my roommate to stay put. I walked into the rear aisle yet again, and walked all the way to the end of it so that I could meet this employee face to face, anticipating that he would be there shortly. I stood there facing the end of the aisle with my arms folded on my chest.
Within five seconds, he popped out from the other side of the aisle. I looked him in the eye and said "Is there a reason I'm being watched like a hawk?". His reply was that it was suspicious that I was there, and that I wasn't asking for their help. He thought it was odd that I was "there with no purpose, not looking for anything in particular". I told him that not only was this inaccurate, but that I needed such a specific part that I had a photo of one printed out so that I would be sure to get the right one. I showed him the printout, but he didn't care. He ranted on about how suspicious I was, and did his best to offend me without specifically calling me a thief. Mind you, the part that I was looking for cost about $12. At that point, I expressed my feelings for how he was treating me. I was extremely offended to say the least. He then told me that he had enough of me, and asked me to leave. He then threatened to get the police involved, and to get my license plate number, etc. I told him to feel free, as no wrongdoing took place other than his harassment.
For the record, neither myself or my roommate dress, look, or act suspicious. We both have clean records. This was just completely uncalled for. Never in my 27 years have I ever been mistreated in such a way.
I decided to call the store at 2:45 that same day, and they "played dumb" as if they weren't aware of the incident. I asked for the person's name who I was speaking with, and he started saying"Steve" but cut himself off to ask what my name was. I asked him again, and he refused to tell me. I asked "are you refusing to tell me your name?". He promptly hung up on me.
I called back instantly, and another employee answered. By the sound of his voice, I could tell that he was the cashier that I approached at the register in the first place. I asked his name, and he told me that they "do not give out names on the phone". I asked for "Steve" to confirm that I had the right name. He told me that Steve wasn't currently available.
I then asked to speak with a manager. He then asked why I wanted to speak to a manager, etc. I told him what I had experienced (as written above). He then accused me of "coming into the store to play games with them". I'm working about 75hrs a week right now. Clearly, I don't have time or interest to play games with some guys in a hardware store I've never been to. These accusations were ludacris.
He then gave me the runaround and he wouldn't give me any contact info for a district manager, etc. He denied me that information, and insisted I send a letter into their manager. I told him that I wasn't comfortable doing that, as I felt my letter may be ignored. I made him give me his word that it would not be. Then I asked for his name, and he told me his name was Bruce. "Ok, Bruce, I'll hold you to that. If I don't hear back soon, you'll be hearing from me".
After some sleuthing online, it appears that I was lied to. The cashier that told me his name was Bruce is actually named Jonny. At least, according to his myspace profile at: "http://www.myspace.com/koolcompukid". I can't say that I'm surprised by any of this. If you review his profile, you can clearly see that he works at the store that I'm writing this complaint about. I'm also 100% sure that he was the cashier in the store.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
