Today my P5 has decided to breakdown. Something is wrong with the tranny. In first and second gear, the car can't drive smooth at all. Imagine the first time you drove a stick and car just kept jerking on you. It's feels very much like that. Once in third gear, everything seems normal.

I was able to get the car to a mechanic's shop, but no one was there so I had to leave it. Anyone know what is wrong with it or had similar problems?
 
100% sure. It's very hard to get the car moving from a stop. Violent jerks, until you get to third. Then its fine. Clutch feels normal, engine revs smoothy,

I have no idea then, I'm sure someone will be able to help...

Does it make any interesting noises?
 
How many miles on the clutch? Normally, I would suggest a fried or worn clutch disc or pressure plate but that it works fine in gears other than 1st or 2nd is strange.

Is the jerking dependent on RPM,MPH or strictly the gear you select?

Either way, please post the findings in case someone else has the same problem.
 
Unless you had crunching and grinding in those gears I dont see mechanically this being an internal tranny issue. Check motor mounts would be my first step :)
 
No crunching or grinding. I thought about the motor mounts, but if you took off slow and steady it wouldn't be so violent (I wouldn't think anyway). I can hope that is what is wrong with it.

Forgot to mention, the CEL eventually came on.

Make sure to check your front and passenger-side mounts, they're more prone to failure.

If you could get us the code that might help. Ripped motor mounts with a stuck open EGR valve might explain the jerking at low RPM and the CEL. How does the car idle?
 
It looks like it will be stranded at the mechanics until Monday before anyone even gets to look at it. I may drive back to it and check the mounts.

That sucks. Can you get to it to get the CEL code. Is there an auto store nearby you could get it to for them to use the OBD diagnostics reader?

Anyway, good luck with it and hopefully it isn't serious.
 
Problem solved!!! It was not transmission related at all. Motor mounts where fine. CEL would have given the answer. Any one got any guess before I give it away? Here is a clue....total repair cost (so far) for the quick fix was less than $10.

I'm stumped, you might want to wait a bit for some other guesses :)

Longshot guess: ripped air intake tube, P0171

EDIT: 719prottege beat me to it!
 
Winner winner chicken dinner. There was a slice in the intake hose where the bellows were. Duct taped it and I was good to go.

Now, I need to find a replacement for it. Or should I pick up a short ram intake?

Sweet, never heard of that problem exhibiting those symptoms before.

If you like being able to hear the engine, go with the SRI. I don't think it'll give you much of a performance increase.

EDIT: If you want a stock replacement the Mazda part number is FP47-13-220A ($42 at onlinemazdaparts.com) or you can get an aftermarket one from Dorman (part number 696-601; $29 from amazon).

I had the same issue a few months ago but it didn't exhibit the same problems as you experienced.
