Two MSP's in my shop with no lsd's

:
Many builds
i was under the assumption that the msp's had a factory lsd......

i am currently working on two 03' Mazdaspeed Protege's and niether of them have any sort of "limited slip" in their differentials....????

one is in for engine work and just checked it from outside the case and the other blew third gear completely off the mainshaft.... so we get the tans upgrade kit from protege garage (still on the way) and i tear this one down but no clutches, cones, viscous-ness, or anything....

i'm putting up pictures in a sec.... anyone else had one open for comparison?

They both should have lsd's it is stock in the msp. That would be odd if they didn't unless someone changed the trans's.

wow, the noise that just went through my head when I look at that 3rd gear image made me cringe...

Our LSDs are different design. They look like open differentials, but in fact are limited slip and do a damn good job of it...that is until the housing separates from the ring gear lol. While the LSDs are out the housing should be TIG/MIG welded to the ring gear to prevent any possible separation in the future.

Where is your shop located by the way? Also, a good way to check if they are in fact LSDs is if they have a round button inside.

ok thats the same kind of diff in the slide show, but what type of "lsd" is it??

i've built many cars in my days and looking at it and being able to freely spin the side gears it doesn't appear to have any kind of torque splitting

ok it has the button..... just a design i haven't ran across yet...

we are getting the trans upgrade kit that has the new lsd and third and fifth gears so hopfully this won't be an issue in the future

The earlier versions of this diff had springs on the sides but they tended to come apart sooner so from what we can tell Mazda/Tochi-fuji-what-ya-call-it
revised it and changed the design.
How did that happen to third gear? If that was because the diff went out under power then I am glad mine died peacefully at a redlight.

the diff is still intact.... third went under power, but not beating on it... just running up through the gears.... but the car makes good power.. 250+ at the wheels

Now that scares the s*** out of me. I am hitting third so hard that I get insane wheelspin.
And if that is a stock diff you might as well weld it now while it is apart because it will break. :(
